Major problems are ahead.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is calling on Republicans to stay united heading into the 2026 midterm elections, warning that control of the House could determine whether President Donald Trump can continue advancing his agenda during the final years of his term.

Speaking Friday at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority conference, Johnson said Republicans cannot afford to lose their majority in Congress, arguing that the stakes are higher than in previous election cycles.

“I run the protection program; I’ll take care of you,” Johnson told Republican lawmakers. “Half of you will be targeted.”

Johnson warned that if Democrats regain control of the House, congressional committees would likely launch extensive investigations into the Trump administration.

“If we were to lose the midterms, heaven forbid, impeachment isn’t even the biggest concern,” Johnson said. “They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body and go after the president’s family, the Cabinet, his donors, and friends.”

The Republican speaker described the upcoming elections as a defining moment for both Congress and the Trump administration. He pointed to recent victories by democratic socialist candidates in New York City as evidence that conservatives must remain engaged and turn out to vote.

“This is a midterm unlike any other,” Johnson said. “The threats we face are real, but there are also plenty of reasons why Republicans should win.”

Johnson also highlighted what he described as a productive record for House Republicans since taking the majority. According to the speaker, the House has passed roughly 700 bills while also approving legislation that codifies about 100 executive actions.

He said Republicans have focused on policies designed to strengthen families, protect unborn life, support economic growth, and improve opportunities for hardworking Americans.

“Think about all the great things we’ve done for hardworking American families,” Johnson said. “Pro-family policies and pro-life policies.”

Johnson also drew laughs from the audience after referencing polling he said showed many Democrats would consider leaving the United States.

“Over half of Democrats say they want to live in another country,” he joked. “Go. We can’t deport that many.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 campaign, Johnson pointed to another encouraging sign for Republicans, saying the GOP currently enjoys a fundraising advantage over Democrats for the first time in a decade.

Republican leaders believe maintaining control of the House will be critical to helping President Trump continue implementing his legislative priorities, including border security, economic reforms, and other key initiatives during the remainder of his presidency.

The Faith & Freedom Coalition remains one of the Republican Party’s most influential grassroots organizations, regularly mobilizing evangelical voters and conservative activists in support of GOP candidates nationwide. Johnson’s remarks underscored the party’s message that the 2026 midterm elections will play a major role in determining the future of President Trump’s agenda and the direction of Congress.
