“Are you talking about allowing someone who uses a harpoon to deduct the cost of that harpoon?” Neguse asked.
“That’s correct,” Smith replied. “It’s a business expense.”
Neguse pressed further, pointing out that the deduction cap was increased from $10,000 to $50,000. Smith confirmed the change, acknowledging the carve-out as part of the final version of the bill that secured Murkowski’s crucial vote.
Democrats smirked and whispered about what they saw as a political payoff.
“Why was that added? I think we all know, right?” Neguse said with a grin—clearly implying that Murkowski traded her vote for a sweetheart deal benefiting her state.
