This is downright awkward.
Vice President Kamala Harris affirmed in her recent “60 Minutes” interview that President Biden is “indeed alive” and has firm intentions to run for re-election. YIKES!
According to Fox, during the interview, Harris engaged with Bill Whitaker on a range of pressing issues, such as the Israel-Gaza conflict, the border crisis, and the upcoming presidential election.
In the midst of their discussion, Whitaker probed into concerns expressed by some Democratic donors about the hypothetical scenario of President Biden being unable to run for re-election. He suggested that this situation could lead to a contested race among potential candidates. Harris responded firmly, stating, “First of all, I’m not going to entertain that hypothetical, because Joe Biden is very much alive and committed to seeking re-election.” Whitaker pressed on, acknowledging the legitimacy of such concerns, but Harris remained resolute, emphasizing her dedication to the job at hand and the critical importance of safeguarding democracy.
The interview took place in the context of Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips announcing his primary challenge to President Biden, with the aim of ushering in a new generation of leadership within the Democratic Party. Notably, the discussion did not touch on Phillips’ campaign.
While President Biden’s incumbency grants him a strong position, questions regarding his age and stamina have persisted among Democratic voters, given that he would be 82 years old if re-elected in 2024.
In contrast, Vice President Harris has faced challenges with her approval ratings. Whitaker highlighted that only 41% of adults surveyed by CBS expressed approval of her work as vice president. Nevertheless, Harris expressed confidence, asserting that when the American people assess their options come election time, the choice will become clear, and the Democratic party will emerge victorious, despite acknowledging that it won’t be an easy endeavor.
