What was he thinking?
California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a tidal wave of criticism after referring to his wife as “First Partner” instead of “wife” in a public birthday message — igniting backlash from conservatives who say it’s another example of liberal overreach and gender politics gone too far.
In a post shared Thursday to celebrate Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s 51st birthday, Newsom wrote:
“Happy Birthday to the First Partner of California, the outstanding mother of our four incredible children, and the love of my life.”
That phrase — “First Partner” — quickly triggered outrage online.
Women’s advocate Riley Gaines slammed the choice of words, tweeting:
“I can’t even fathom my husband unironically calling me his partner????”
Many saw Newsom’s post as a blatant display of political correctness and woke ideology, with users mocking him for being more focused on inclusivity than reality.
One user fumed, “‘First Partner’ is grounds for an immediate divorce.” Another asked, “Have you considered marrying your ‘partner’ so she’s actually your wife?” Others questioned if Newsom was trying to avoid “gendered” terms altogether.
“Were you unsure about her gender?” one person asked sarcastically. “Why not just call her a birthing person and be done with it?”
The irony wasn’t lost on critics: Newsom still called her a “mother” — a traditionally feminine role — while avoiding the word “wife.”
Critics say this is just more proof that today’s Democrats are out of touch with traditional American values. For many, especially older voters, the term “First Lady” represents dignity, family, and respect — values being eroded by woke language and radical ideology.
On the official website, Jennifer Siebel Newsom proudly identifies herself as “First Partner,” claiming the title promotes “inclusivity” and prepares for a future with LGBTQ+ governors.
Her biography states:
“Jennifer Siebel Newsom chose the title First Partner, as opposed to First Lady, to send a signal of inclusivity… and elevate the importance of partnership and a caring, inclusive government.”
But millions of Americans are asking: What about common sense? What about tradition?
This isn’t the first time Governor Newsom has leaned into progressive social messaging — and it likely won’t be the last. But the overwhelming response this week shows that patriotic Americans are fed up with the left’s constant attacks on faith, family, and normalcy.
