Lawmakers are taking sharp jabs at each other.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) praised House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday, emphasizing his integrity and strong moral character, drawing a stark contrast between Johnson and his predecessors in Washington. Burchett, who is still deciding who he will support in the upcoming GOP leadership race, made it clear that Johnson’s honesty and commitment to family values set him apart from other politicians in the House.
“I think Mike will ultimately be successful in the speakership race,” Burchett told Fox News’ Your World. “He’s been a good friend to me and, more importantly, he’s one of the most honest men I’ve worked with in Washington. Mike is a man of faith. He doesn’t cheat on his wife, and that matters in this town.”
Burchett’s comments appeared to be a pointed jab at former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whose personal life has long been subject to speculation. McCarthy, who faced rumors about infidelity during his time in office, was the subject of a dramatic exit from the speaker’s race in 2015, when an anonymous allegation linked him to an affair with Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.). Although both McCarthy and Ellmers denied the allegations, the rumors lingered and were believed to have played a role in McCarthy’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Burchett’s comments come as part of his broader frustration with the Washington establishment and a growing desire for leadership that reflects conservative values. He was one of the key members who, alongside a group of Democrats, voted to remove McCarthy from his post in the fall of 2023. This move was motivated, in part, by McCarthy’s handling of the war in Ukraine and other issues, with Burchett among those calling for a more principled, America-first agenda.
Burchett’s remarks also align with the sentiments of other conservatives, like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who has openly criticized establishment Republicans in favor of more principled, values-driven leadership. Gaetz, who has had his own controversies, echoed Burchett’s support for Johnson, suggesting that Republicans should unite behind him despite the opposition from some factions within the GOP.
As Johnson faces a crucial vote to retain the speakership, Burchett’s endorsement is a sign that many within the GOP appreciate his steadfast principles. President-elect Donald Trump has also backed Johnson, adding weight to his candidacy, though some Republicans, like Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), and Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), remain undecided. The outcome of the vote will have significant implications for the direction of the GOP as it moves forward into the next Congress.
