No one is above the law.
The Trump administration is taking bold legal action against Minnesota, launching a federal civil rights investigation into what officials say are illegal, race-based hiring quotas under Governor Tim Walz’s leadership.
At the heart of the probe is a controversial new directive from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The policy threatens supervisors with discipline—even termination—if they hire a non-minority candidate in job categories deemed “underrepresented.” Critics say it’s blatant discrimination wrapped in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) talking points.
“Minnesotans deserve a government that hires based on merit—not skin color or political ideology,” said U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “These policies are un-American and unlawful.”
Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, delivered a stern warning: “Title VII of the Civil Rights Act is crystal clear—hiring decisions based on race or sex are illegal. Minnesota’s policy isn’t just unethical, it’s unconstitutional. The Justice Department under President Trump will not tolerate this.”
According to Dhillon’s letter to state officials, the DHS policy defines “underrepresented” hires as women or racial minorities—including Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Alaskan Native candidates. Supervisors are told to justify any decision not to hire from these categories or face serious consequences.
“This isn’t equality—it’s discrimination disguised as progress,” Dhillon stated. “And when states engage in this kind of woke overreach, federal law steps in.”
The DHS defended the policy, claiming it aligns with Minnesota’s “affirmative action responsibilities” and reflects the “client base” of the agency. But critics argue it’s just another example of DEI overreach pushed by progressive officials in blue states.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has confronted Minnesota over left-wing policies. In June, the DOJ filed a lawsuit challenging state laws that hand out free or reduced in-state tuition to illegal immigrants—while U.S. citizens struggle under rising college costs.
And in April, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued the Trump DOJ to protect policies allowing biological males to compete in girls’ school sports—another flashpoint in the nationwide culture war.
With the 2024 election behind him and President Trump back in the White House, the administration is making it clear: America’s laws will be enforced equally—and radical DEI mandates will be met with federal action.
