This is a concerning sign.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) issued a blunt warning to the nation Monday, declaring that the ongoing government shutdown could soon become one of the longest in U.S. history — unless Democrats let go of their partisan demands and accept the Republican plan to reopen the government.
“We’re heading straight for one of the longest government shutdowns in our nation’s history unless Democrats abandon their partisan ultimatums and approve a straightforward funding bill to reopen the government and pay federal employees,” Johnson said Monday during a press conference marking the 13th day of the shutdown.
Democrats Play Politics With Americans’ Paychecks
Republicans say Democrats are holding the government hostage over expiring Obamacare subsidies — taxpayer-funded handouts set to lapse at the end of the year.
Instead of working together to fund essential government services, Senate Democrats are demanding new spending on healthcare programs already plagued by fraud and waste.
House Republicans, led by President Trump’s allies, are refusing to give in. They’ve already passed a “clean” stopgap funding bill — one that Senate Democrats have now blocked seven separate times.
Johnson made it clear that conservatives won’t surrender to political games.
“We’re ready to negotiate on real appropriations — but not as hostages in smoke-filled back rooms,” he said.
Shutdown History Repeats Under Democrat Chaos
This showdown has now lasted 13 days and counting, placing it among the longest government shutdowns in modern American history.
The last major shutdown — during President Trump’s first term — lasted 35 days as he fought to secure America’s borders against Democrat obstruction.
For comparison, the Clinton shutdown lasted 21 days, while shutdowns under Obama and Carter each lasted just 17.
The difference? Republicans were fighting for the American taxpayer, while Democrats were fighting to protect their pet programs.
Johnson Calls It What It Is: “The Schumer Shutdown”
Speaker Johnson didn’t mince words about who’s to blame.
“This crisis was created by Chuck Schumer and the Democrats,” Johnson declared.
He praised House Republicans for staying laser-focused on getting results, even while Democrats drag their feet.
“You can poll individual House Republicans — 98.7% will tell you this is the right thing,” he said. “We’re working hard on the next appropriations package, helping veterans, seniors, and working-class Americans suffering under this Schumer Shutdown.”
GOP Stands Firm: No Backroom Deals, No More Waste
Some in Washington have called for Congress to resume regular business during the standoff. But Johnson insists that Republicans must hold the line — and that standing strong now will save the nation from even more reckless spending later.
“We won’t negotiate behind closed doors or allow Democrats to use the American people as bargaining chips,” Johnson said.
As the shutdown moves closer to its third week, the Republican message remains crystal clear:
Democrats are playing politics with your paycheck, your freedom, and your future.
