This was unexpected.

On Thursday, a prominent anti-abortion organization criticized former President Donald Trump for his campaign’s statement that he supports granting states the authority to determine their own abortion laws.

According to NBC, in response to a query by The Washington Post regarding former President Donald Trump’s stance on Governor Ron DeSantis’ signing of the Florida six-week abortion ban, the Trump campaign received a severe reprimand from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung’s explained, “President Donald J. Trump believes that the Supreme Court, led by the three justices which he supported, got it right when they ruled this is an issue that should be decided at the state level.”

Following the publication of the story, SBA Pro-Life America’s President, Marjorie Dannenfelser, explicitly criticized Trump in a statement released on Thursday.

Dannenfelser stated that “President Trump’s claim that the Supreme Court delegated the matter of abortion exclusively to individual states is an entirely erroneous interpretation of the Dobbs verdict and an ethically unjustifiable stance for someone who claims to be a pro-life presidential candidate.”

“We will oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard,” she went on to say.

Upon contacting Cheung for her response, a spokesperson for Trump countered with a statement emphasizing the need to prioritize saving lives and avoiding ideological entrapment from the radical left, rather than causing division within the pro-life movement.

Furthermore, the spokesperson reaffirmed Trump’s stance that individual states should have the authority to determine their own policies regarding abortion.
