Why would Trump do this?
President Donald Trump has reportedly revoked security protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former senior aide Brian Hook, despite ongoing threats from Iran. According to The New York Times, which spoke to several sources familiar with the matter, the decision came after the Biden administration had warned about the continuing risks to both men, who were key figures in the Trump administration’s hardline approach to Iran.
This decision follows the removal of security protection for former National Security Advisor John Bolton, who was also a target due to his involvement in U.S. policy towards Iran. Both Pompeo and Hook, along with Bolton, were granted security details during the Biden administration due to the direct threats they faced, particularly stemming from their roles in the 2020 drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Pompeo’s leadership in the CIA and later as Secretary of State, along with Hook’s role as the U.S. Special Representative for Iran, put them at the center of the Trump administration’s aggressive foreign policy toward Iran. This included withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, imposing stringent sanctions, and labeling Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization. Their efforts, particularly the targeted strike on Soleimani, have made them prime targets for retaliation from the Iranian regime.
Despite these ongoing threats, Trump defended his decision, explaining that such security measures should not be expected indefinitely. “You take a job, you want to do a job, we’re not going to have people with security for the rest of their lives. Why should we?” Trump remarked, reflecting his belief that security should be temporary, not permanent.
While Trump’s critics may see this move as a dismissal of real threats, it aligns with his broader policy of reducing government entanglements. The Trump administration’s tough stance on Iran remains a key part of his legacy, and his decision to revoke these security details signals a belief in self-sufficiency and a desire to move past the prior administration’s approach.
