On Monday, Trump suggested that the U.S. should secure access to Ukraine’s vast natural resources—specifically rare earth elements—as part of a deal for ongoing support.
“We’re giving Ukraine money, we’re giving them equipment, but we need something in return,” Trump said during a meeting in the Oval Office. “We’re looking to do a deal where Ukraine secures the rare earth elements and other valuable resources they have in exchange for the aid we’re providing.”
Rare earth elements, which are crucial for high-tech industries like electronics, renewable energy, and healthcare, are in short supply globally. These minerals are essential for making everything from smartphones and computers to wind turbines and electric car batteries. Trump’s desire to ensure the U.S. has reliable access to these materials could strengthen America’s position in the global economy, especially in competition with China, which controls much of the global supply.
But it’s not just rare earths Trump is interested in. Ukraine is home to large deposits of other critical minerals like lithium, titanium, and uranium. These are highly valuable resources, and Ukraine’s “Victory Plan” already states the country’s goal of partnering with strategic allies to supply these materials. This could be worth trillions of dollars over time, a massive economic opportunity for both the U.S. and Ukraine.
This approach to foreign policy is consistent with Trump’s broader vision of putting America first by ensuring the country gets something tangible in return for its investments abroad. As he has made clear in the past, America should never give away resources without securing something of equal value in return—whether it’s in Ukraine, Greenland, or other strategic regions around the world.
