Here’s what President Trump has decided to do.
The Trump administration reportedly notified organizations late Tuesday that hundreds of federal grants supporting mental health and addiction treatment programs would be discontinued, according to multiple reports.
National Public Radio (NPR) reported Wednesday that recipients funded through the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) were informed that their grants were being terminated following an internal review. Officials reportedly concluded that some programs no longer aligned with the administration’s policy objectives.
The full scope of the funding reductions has not been officially confirmed. However, sources familiar with the matter told NPR the total cuts could approach $2 billion, potentially affecting programs nationwide that address mental illness, substance abuse, and opioid addiction.
The White House and SAMHSA have been contacted for comment, but no formal statement had been released as of Wednesday.
Mental Health Groups Sound the Alarm
Leaders within the mental health and addiction treatment community quickly raised concerns. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) confirmed that organizations in its network were impacted by the funding changes.
“These funding cuts threaten the stability of mental health services that millions of Americans rely on,” NAMI CEO Daniel H. Gillison Jr. said in a statement, adding that mental health and addiction treatment have historically received bipartisan support in Congress.
Democrats Demand Funding Be Restored
Several Democratic lawmakers criticized the administration’s decision and called for immediate action to reverse the cuts.
Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin said the reductions could weaken efforts to address opioid addiction and mental health challenges affecting families across the country.
“At a time when communities are struggling with addiction and mental health crises, eliminating support creates serious risks,” Baldwin said.
Sen. Patty Murray of Washington also urged lawmakers from both parties to intervene, arguing that the funding cuts contradict public commitments to combat addiction and suicide.
Administration Focuses on Policy Alignment
Supporters of the Trump administration have argued that federal agencies must prioritize taxpayer dollars and ensure funding is directed toward programs that align with executive policy goals and demonstrate measurable results.
Administration officials have previously stated that grant programs are routinely reviewed to ensure effectiveness and alignment with broader federal priorities.
As of now, it remains unclear which specific programs will be affected long term or whether alternative funding mechanisms may be introduced.
Further clarification from federal officials is expected in the coming days as lawmakers and advocacy groups continue to press for answers.
