This was surprising to hear.
President Donald Trump — the man behind the lightning-fast pandemic vaccine rollout — surprised supporters this week by downplaying one of his most celebrated first-term victories: Operation Warp Speed.
The moment came Wednesday during a White House event, after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a $500 million funding cut to next-generation mRNA vaccine research for Coronavirus, bird flu, and other dangerous respiratory illnesses.
These cuts target projects that medical experts claim are critical for future pandemic prevention — but Kennedy says the risks now outweigh the benefits.
Reporter Confronts Trump Over His Own Legacy
A reporter pressed the president, noting: “You were the driving force behind Operation Warp Speed… Now your health secretary is walking away from it. What’s going on?”
Trump’s short reply:
“Well, we’re going to look at that… and that is a pass.”
While calling Warp Speed “one of the most incredible things ever done in this country,” Trump said it was “a long time ago” and insisted the U.S. is now “onto other things… other sicknesses and diseases.”
Why Operation Warp Speed Still Matters
In 2020, Trump’s partnership between government and the private sector shattered expectations, delivering a pandemic vaccine in less than a year. Experts had predicted at least an 18-month wait. At the time, Trump hailed it as a “monumental national achievement.”
Now, with Kennedy reversing course on funding, that chapter of Trump’s presidency could be fading — even as doctors warn America can’t afford to lose mRNA research.
Medical Experts Sound the Alarm
Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, who served under Trump, warned the funding cut will “cost lives,” noting mRNA technology could be critical for fighting future diseases.
Stanford infectious-disease expert Dr. Jake Scott blasted Kennedy’s move as “naive,” saying it sacrifices the very speed that saved lives during the last pandemic.
Veteran epidemiologist Mike Osterholm of the University of Minnesota called it “one of the most dangerous decisions in public health” in 50 years.
Vaccination Rates Falling Across America
The CDC reports vaccination rates for children entering kindergarten in 2024-25 have dropped for nearly every major vaccine. Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) coverage is now just 92.5%, while exemption rates have climbed to 3.6%.
Health officials warn this decline is fueling the return of diseases once nearly eliminated, including measles and whooping cough.
What This Means for the Future
Kennedy has called for “better solutions” than mRNA technology — but has not offered clear alternatives. For now, Trump seems ready to focus on other priorities, even as many of his own former health experts say this decision could weaken America’s readiness for the next health crisis.
