A political battle is brewing over America’s 250th anniversary celebration after congressional Democrats accused President Donald Trump of using the historic event to advance his political agenda.
Republicans, meanwhile, say the criticism is another example of Democrats focusing on investigations instead of celebrating the nation’s history.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., strongly defended the president during an appearance on The Big Weekend Show, arguing that the America250 celebration was about honoring the country’s founding, military service members, and the sacrifices that built the United States.
Comer said Democrats appear more interested in attacking Trump than recognizing one of the most significant milestones in American history.
“We are the greatest nation in the history of the world,” Comer said, crediting the nation’s success to the sacrifices of the Founding Fathers, American troops, and generations of citizens who helped preserve the country’s freedoms.
His comments came after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, released a 55-page report criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the America250 celebration.
The report alleges that the White House transformed what was intended to be a bipartisan commemoration into an event that promoted Trump’s political priorities, personal brand, and broader agenda. Democrats also questioned the administration’s relationship with Freedom 250 LLC, a private organization that reportedly played a major role in organizing portions of the anniversary festivities.
According to the report, the group became heavily involved after disagreements between the Trump administration and the official America250 Commission. Democrats claim the organization helped coordinate events while steering donor money and contracts in ways they believe deserve additional scrutiny.
Those allegations have already sparked calls from some Democrats for further congressional oversight.
Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., said during a television interview that the matter would likely receive additional attention if Democrats regain control of the House after the upcoming midterm elections.
Republicans quickly pushed back.
Comer dismissed the report as politically motivated, arguing that Democrats remain focused on investigating Trump instead of addressing issues that matter most to American families.
He said the House Oversight Committee is currently concentrating on uncovering government waste, fraud, and abuse rather than launching investigations driven by partisan politics.
Comer also defended Trump’s role in the America250 celebration, saying the president’s message centered on patriotism, honoring America’s heroes, and recognizing the country’s remarkable history.
According to Comer, the anniversary events celebrated the courage of the nation’s founders, the sacrifices of military service members, and the freedoms that continue to make the United States unique.
He argued that while millions of Americans viewed the 250th anniversary as a time to celebrate the country’s achievements, many Democrats instead chose to make the occasion another political fight centered on Trump.
The disagreement underscores the sharp divide heading into the next election cycle, with Republicans portraying the America250 celebration as a patriotic tribute to the nation’s history, while Democrats argue the event deserves closer oversight and greater political independence.
As Congress prepares for another contentious election season, the debate surrounding America’s historic 250th birthday celebration appears far from over.
