Ossoff Becomes Major Problem For Trump

Ossoff is becoming a bigger problem than Republicans initially expected.

A new election forecast is raising concerns for Republicans as they battle to regain control of the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.

The University of Virginia’s Sabato’s Crystal Ball, one of the nation’s most closely watched election forecasting publications, has upgraded Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff’s reelection race from “Leans Democrat” to “Likely Democrat.” The analysts pointed to Ossoff’s fundraising advantage, consistent polling lead, and a political environment they believe currently favors Democrats.

The updated rating represents a setback for Republicans, who entered the election cycle viewing Georgia as one of their best opportunities to flip a Democratic-held Senate seat.

Georgia Senate Race Draws National Attention

Georgia remains one of the country’s most competitive political battlegrounds, making the Ossoff race one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 midterm elections.

President Donald Trump carried Georgia in the 2024 presidential election, leading many Republicans to believe the state offered a strong opportunity to expand the GOP’s Senate majority.

However, Crystal Ball analysts now argue the race appears less competitive than several months ago. In fact, they now view Michigan—not Georgia—as Republicans’ top opportunity to gain a Democratic Senate seat.

Ossoff Builds Massive Fundraising Advantage

One of the biggest reasons behind the rating change is money.

According to the report, Ossoff raised more than $20 million during the second quarter of 2026 and finished the reporting period with approximately $42 million in campaign cash, giving him one of the largest financial advantages of any Senate candidate in the country.

Republican Rep. Mike Collins, who secured his party’s nomination after a competitive primary, raised just over $2 million during the same period and entered the general election with roughly the same amount available for the campaign ahead.

Campaign resources often play a major role in statewide elections, allowing candidates to expand advertising, voter outreach, and grassroots organizing during the final months before Election Day.

Polls Continue To Favor The Incumbent

Public polling throughout 2026 has generally shown Ossoff maintaining a steady lead.

While Sabato’s Crystal Ball cautioned that some surveys could overstate his advantage, analysts also acknowledged that Collins may gain ground as Republican voters fully unite behind his candidacy.

Even so, the report noted that recent Georgia elections have demonstrated Democrats can still win statewide races despite losing white voters by significant margins—a trend previously seen in victories by both Ossoff and fellow Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock.

The forecast also pointed to recent controversy surrounding Collins after reports involving social media activity by his son-in-law, saying the issue complicated his transition from the Republican primary into the general election campaign.

Although analysts believe the race could still tighten, they wrote they are becoming increasingly confident in Ossoff’s position, adding that a Republican victory would be a significant surprise based on current political conditions.

House Battle Becoming Increasingly Competitive

The Crystal Ball also released updated projections for the fight over control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

While Republicans still have multiple paths to keeping their majority, analysts concluded Democrats currently hold the advantage heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

The report cited Democrats’ lead on the generic congressional ballot, where the party has maintained an average advantage of roughly five to six percentage points.

Analysts also pointed to President Trump’s job approval numbers, noting that approval ratings around or below 40 percent have historically created favorable conditions for the party out of power during midterm elections.

More House Seats Move Into The Battleground Category

Reflecting those political trends, Crystal Ball expanded its list of true toss-up House races from 15 to 20 districts.

Under the latest ratings:

  • Republicans currently hold 208 seats rated Lean Republican or stronger.
  • Democrats hold 207 seats rated Lean Democrat or stronger.
  • 20 races are now considered complete toss-ups that could determine which party controls the House.

Several Republican-held districts were downgraded from Lean Republican to Toss-up, including competitive seats in New York and Pennsylvania.

The publication also shifted Republican-held districts in Texas and Ohio from Likely Republican to Lean Republican, signaling that Democrats could make those races more competitive than previously expected.

Republicans Still Have A Path To Victory

Despite the updated projections, Crystal Ball emphasized that Republicans remain very much in the fight.

Analysts said favorable redistricting, outside campaign spending, strong candidate recruitment, and changing political conditions could still help Republicans retain control of the House.

At the same time, the publication concluded that if today’s political environment remains largely unchanged through Election Day, Democrats would enter November with the clearer path to winning back the House majority.

With the battle for Congress expected to shape the final two years of President Trump’s second term, both parties are preparing for one of the most closely watched election cycles in recent memory. As always, the outcome will ultimately be decided by voters at the ballot box.
