Trump Makes Stunning Confession After Election Loss

President Donald Trump made a surprising revelation Wednesday after one of his endorsed Republican candidates suffered a high-profile defeat in Florida’s primary elections.

Trump revealed that he had privately encouraged Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., to drop out of his reelection race before voters ultimately rejected the incumbent in favor of former television journalist Ryan Elijah.

The disclosure immediately attracted attention because Trump had previously endorsed Mills and had never publicly announced that he was withdrawing that support before the election.

Now, with the Republican primary settled, Trump is making it clear where he stands — and throwing his full political weight behind the man who defeated Mills.

Trump Reveals Private Warning To Cory Mills

Following Tuesday’s election results, Trump addressed Mills’ defeat in a post on Truth Social.

The president said he had personally advised the Florida congressman to leave the race but that Mills believed he could still win.

Trump said he had advised Florida Rep. Cory Mills, whom he described as a friend, to withdraw from the race, but Mills chose to stay in the contest.

Trump added that Mills believed he had a path to victory and suggested he understood why the congressman decided to remain in the contest.

But Trump quickly moved beyond the defeated incumbent and focused his attention on Elijah.

The president enthusiastically endorsed the Republican nominee, describing Elijah as firmly aligned with the MAGA movement and giving him his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”

The announcement represents an immediate political reset for Trump and Republicans as they turn their attention toward the November midterm elections.

Ryan Elijah Scores Major Florida Primary Victory

Elijah’s victory was significant because defeating an incumbent member of Congress in a party primary is no small accomplishment.

The former Orlando-area television journalist challenged Mills at a time when the congressman was facing growing scrutiny over several controversies.

Elijah said after his victory that voters had been looking for an alternative.

He characterized the election result as a victory for ordinary voters and said many people he encountered during the campaign believed they were not receiving the representation they deserved in Washington.

Elijah also argued that Americans are increasingly frustrated by ethical controversies involving politicians from both parties.

Trump wasted little time congratulating the winner. Elijah said he received a congratulatory text from the president following the election.

The Republican nominee must now turn his attention toward November, when control of the House will be one of the biggest political battles facing both parties.

Republicans Rally Behind Elijah

Several prominent Florida Republicans had already broken with Mills before Election Day.

Republican Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos backed Elijah in the primary.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also publicly stated shortly before the election that he neither endorsed nor supported Mills.

Haridopolos said protecting the Republican House majority played an important role in his decision.

With every congressional seat potentially important in determining control of Washington, Republicans cannot afford to overlook races where a candidate’s personal controversies could become a major general-election liability.

Haridopolos said he concluded earlier in the year that Mills would have difficulty winning the general election because of the challenges surrounding his candidacy.

He subsequently helped recruit Elijah to enter the race.

The result suggests Republican primary voters reached a similar conclusion.

Ethics Controversies Followed Mills Into Primary

Mills, an Army veteran, entered the election facing several serious allegations and an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation.

He has denied wrongdoing.

One controversy stemmed from a February 2025 incident investigated by Washington, D.C., police involving allegations of a physical dispute with a woman.

Mills was not charged in connection with the incident, and the woman later withdrew portions of her original account.

The House Ethics Committee subsequently emphasized that a decision not to pursue criminal charges should not automatically be interpreted as a determination that no wrongdoing occurred.

Other questions surrounding Mills also attracted congressional scrutiny.

A separate controversy involved a former girlfriend who accused Mills of harassment and making threats concerning private material. Mills has disputed allegations of wrongdoing.

The House Ethics Committee’s investigation itself does not establish that Mills violated congressional rules or committed a crime.

Nevertheless, the accumulation of controversies became a major political obstacle as Mills attempted to secure another term.

Trump-Endorsed Candidates Face Mixed Night

Mills was not the only Trump-backed candidate to lose Tuesday.

Catalina Lauf, running in Florida’s 19th Congressional District, and Wyoming gubernatorial candidate Megan Degenfelder also fell short.

Those defeats provided Trump’s political opponents with an opportunity to question the strength of his endorsements heading into the midterms.

But the broader numbers tell a more complicated story.

Trump-backed candidates have won the overwhelming majority of the primary contests in which the president has made endorsements during the 2026 election cycle.

That record demonstrates that Trump continues to wield substantial influence among Republican primary voters, even though his endorsement does not guarantee victory in every race.

The Florida result is particularly interesting because Trump says he had privately reached the conclusion that Mills should leave the race even though his earlier public endorsement remained.

Trump Quickly Moves On From Primary Defeat

Trump’s reaction shows that he has little interest in dwelling on Tuesday’s loss.

Instead, the president is immediately attempting to unite Republican voters behind Elijah and focus attention on the November general election.

That could prove important.

Republicans are fighting to protect their House majority, meaning individual congressional races could have national consequences for Trump’s agenda during the final two years of his current term.

Losing control of the House could make it significantly more difficult for the White House to advance legislation and could give Democrats greater power to investigate the administration.

Keeping Republican-leaning districts in GOP hands is therefore a major priority.

Trump appears to believe Elijah is now the candidate best positioned to accomplish that goal in Florida’s 7th Congressional District.

Florida Race Sends A Message To Washington

The outcome also delivers a broader reminder to politicians in both parties: incumbency and powerful endorsements do not make a candidate unbeatable.

Elijah successfully challenged a sitting Republican congressman while presenting himself as an alternative for voters frustrated with controversy in Washington.

For Trump, the result produced an unusual political moment.

The president had publicly endorsed Mills earlier in the election cycle, but after Mills lost, Trump revealed that he had privately urged the congressman to abandon his reelection effort.

Now Trump has fully embraced the primary winner.

Rather than allowing the Republican Party to remain divided after a contentious primary, Trump is attempting to quickly consolidate support around Elijah and move on to the bigger battle in November.

With control of Congress hanging in the balance, Republicans will be watching Florida and other competitive House races closely.

And Trump’s post-election revelation makes one thing clear: while he may have endorsed Mills publicly, the president says he had already concluded behind the scenes that Republicans needed someone else on the ballot.
