What is Bush thinking?
In a recent video that has gained traction on social media, former President Bill Clinton revealed that George W. Bush has a positive view of Rep. Colin Allred, a Democratic challenger to Senator Ted Cruz. Clinton’s comments came during an appearance supporting the Harris-Walz campaign, where he highlighted Allred’s inspiring journey from professional football to law school after an injury cut his NFL career short. Clinton remarked that Allred is someone anyone would admire, quoting Bush’s endorsement: “this guy is great!”
Allred, currently serving Texas’s 32nd district, is taking on Cruz, who has held his Senate seat since 2013. Despite being a first-term Democrat, Allred faces significant challenges in a state that leans Republican. In 2018, Cruz defeated Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke by over 200,000 votes, and the upcoming election looks to be just as competitive.
Recent polling data paints a tight race. A Morning Consult survey conducted from late October shows Cruz leading with 47% among likely voters, compared to Allred’s 44%, with a margin of error of 2%. Another poll by Cygnal shows Cruz ahead 49% to 45%. Additionally, a poll by ActiVote indicates Cruz with a slightly larger lead at 52% to 48%.
As the campaign heats up, there’s growing pressure on Bush to speak out regarding the presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Notably, several former Bush staffers, including Liz Cheney and Nicolle Wallace, have publicly supported Harris, raising questions about Bush’s silence on the matter. Cheney urged Bush to take a stand, suggesting that it’s time for him to make his position known.
The dynamics of this race reflect the broader tensions within the Republican Party and the challenges faced by candidates in a polarized political climate. With Cruz’s experience and Allred’s momentum, this election could be a pivotal moment for Texas voters.
