Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee is backing a major new tribute to Dolly Parton that could put the late country music legend’s name on one of the most recognizable landmarks in Nashville.
Lee and Nashville International Airport announced Friday that they intend to pursue naming the airport in Parton’s honor, creating what state officials describe as a lasting tribute to the Tennessee native’s extraordinary life, music and charitable work.
The proposal comes just days after Parton’s death at age 80 and amid an outpouring of tributes from fans across Tennessee and around the world.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said in announcing the proposal.
The Republican governor highlighted Parton’s journey from rural East Tennessee to international stardom, while emphasizing the values that remained closely associated with her throughout her life.
“From her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her,” Lee said.
He added that Nashville’s airport would be a fitting place to preserve a legacy defined by “music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
Dolly Parton Airport Proposal Moves Forward
The proposal would give Tennessee one of its most visible permanent tributes to Parton, whose remarkable career transformed her from a girl raised in the mountains of East Tennessee into one of the most famous entertainers in American history.
Lee spoke with members of Parton’s team about the idea this week.
According to the governor’s office, Parton’s representatives expressed appreciation for the enormous public response following her death and said they were touched by the airport proposal and open to continuing discussions about it.
The change is not final, however.
The Metro Nashville Airport Authority is expected to address both the proposal and its existing airport naming policy during a meeting scheduled for Sept. 17.
That distinction is important because current airport policy presents a potential hurdle to immediately naming the facility for Parton.
Still, the support of Tennessee’s governor and airport leadership gives the proposal considerable momentum.
Thousands Back A Permanent Tribute To Dolly Parton
The idea of putting Parton’s name on Nashville International Airport did not begin with Lee.
A public petition calling for the change was originally launched in 2025 and received renewed attention following Parton’s death. By Friday, more than 150,000 people had reportedly signed the effort.
The proposal could also make history.
If ultimately approved, Parton would become the first woman whose name appears on one of the 50 busiest airports in the United States.
That would place the Tennessee legend in select company among prominent Americans whose names have become permanently associated with major airports.
For supporters, however, the argument for honoring Parton goes well beyond her celebrity.
From Humble Beginnings To Country Music Royalty
Born in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family with limited financial resources in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Her upbringing later became an important part of both her music and her public identity.
Parton ultimately made her way to Nashville and built a career that spanned generations.

The program began in 1995 in Parton’s home county before expanding far beyond Tennessee.
Through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, hundreds of millions of books have been distributed to children over the years.

Nashville Airport CEO Praises Dolly Parton’s Values
Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority President and CEO Doug Kreulen said Nashville International Airport serves as the “front door to Music City.”
That role, he said, gives the airport a responsibility to represent the best qualities of the community it serves.
Kreulen pointed to Parton’s belief that people deserved dignity and opportunity regardless of where they came from or their financial circumstances.
That message carries particular significance considering Parton’s own beginnings.
Long before the awards, sold-out performances and international fame, she was a young girl growing up with little money in rural Tennessee.
Her ability to remember those roots even after becoming a global superstar helped make Parton a rare cultural figure admired by Americans across political and generational lines.
Could Nashville International Airport Really Be Renamed?
There are still steps remaining before travelers begin seeing Dolly Parton’s name at Nashville International Airport.
The Metro Nashville Airport Authority is scheduled to consider the matter on Sept. 17.
The airport authority will also have to address its current naming policy as part of that discussion.
That means Lee’s announcement should be viewed as a significant proposal backed by state and airport leadership rather than a completed name change.
But momentum behind the idea has grown rapidly.
Along with Lee’s endorsement, the public petition supporting the tribute has attracted more than 150,000 signatures.
If the proposal receives final approval, millions of passengers traveling through Music City could eventually arrive at an airport bearing the name of one of Tennessee’s most famous daughters.
