In a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” host Joe Rogan raised serious concerns about the implications of a potential Kamala Harris presidency for free speech online. He argued that under her leadership, we could see an intensified crackdown on digital expression, which he fears would be a continuation of the censorship trends we’ve already witnessed on platforms like Twitter.
“I don’t think it turns around if Kamala Harris gets into office,” Rogan stated emphatically. “I think they clamp down more. The same tactics they used with Twitter will likely be applied to other platforms.” This sentiment resonates with many who believe that the left is increasingly hostile toward open dialogue, particularly on issues that challenge mainstream narratives.
Elon Musk, the tech visionary and free speech advocate, echoed Rogan’s sentiments, sharing the clip on X and affirming Rogan’s points. The discussion turned particularly pointed when Rogan highlighted comments from Vice President Kamala Harris’s team, including statements made by Tim Walz, who suggested that the First Amendment might not protect what they deem “misinformation.”
Walz’s assertion, made in a late 2022 MSNBC interview, that free speech protections do not extend to misinformation is alarming for those who value our constitutional rights. While misinformation can have real-world consequences, the Supreme Court has consistently ruled that there is no exception for “hate speech” under the First Amendment.
Rogan emphasized the importance of discourse, stating, “The goal of the First Amendment is for people to say something incorrect, allowing others to correct it with facts.” His guest, former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan, added that misinformation is often subjective, calling it “all opinion.”
