Joy got taught an important lesson.
Joy Behar found herself facing pushback from her own colleagues on “The View” after claiming the media has not scrutinized President Donald Trump’s health as aggressively as it scrutinized former President Joe Biden.
The exchange quickly became heated as several co-hosts challenged Behar’s argument — including Sara Haines, who pointed out that Trump is already discussed regularly on the daytime talk show.
The debate began while the panel was discussing aging political leaders and Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Behar soon shifted the conversation toward Trump and the media.
“The media does not cover Trump the way they covered Joe Biden,” Behar said.
But Haines immediately offered a different explanation.
She argued that Trump’s speaking style has long been unpredictable and freewheeling, making it more difficult to point to a dramatic change from his previous public appearances.
“Trump has always sounded like this,” Haines said, adding that he often moves from subject to subject before returning to the original question.
Haines then contrasted Trump with Biden.
According to Haines, Biden once presented himself very differently in public, making later changes more noticeable to viewers.
That explanation sparked immediate disagreement from Ana Navarro.
Navarro listed several observations about Trump’s behavior and physical appearance while arguing that concerns surrounding him deserved more attention.
Those comments represented Navarro’s personal assessment and should not be confused with a medical diagnosis.
Haines responded that she was not attempting to defend Trump.
Instead, she said her point was about contrast.
Haines explained that the more noticeable the difference, the easier it is for people to understand the point.
Alyssa Farah Griffin then weighed in and directly disputed Behar’s suggestion that Trump’s condition receives little attention.
“I think the media does cover that Trump is declining,” Griffin said, expressing her own opinion during the discussion.
Then Haines delivered the remark that appeared to undercut Behar’s complaint most directly.
“Here alone, Joy, you talk about him every day,” Haines told her.
Behar quickly moved the program to a commercial break.
Behar’s Media Claim Gets Challenged
The exchange highlighted a larger disagreement over whether Trump and Biden have received equal treatment from the national media when questions involving age and presidential performance arise.
Behar’s position was clear: she believes Trump is receiving less scrutiny.
But even some of her fellow co-hosts were not convinced.
Haines’ response was especially notable because she did not argue that criticism of Trump was unwarranted.
Instead, she questioned Behar’s claim that the subject is being ignored.
For viewers who regularly watch “The View,” Trump is hardly an uncommon topic.
That made Haines’ reminder particularly pointed.
White House Fires Back at Behar
The White House later responded to Behar’s remarks with a sharply worded statement.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle personally criticized Behar and accused her of suffering from what Trump supporters commonly call “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The statement went far beyond a disagreement over media coverage and included several insults directed at the longtime television host.
Behar has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics on daytime television, while “The View” has repeatedly featured contentious discussions about his presidency and political career.
Biden’s Age Became a Major 2024 Issue
The discussion inevitably brought renewed attention to the media coverage surrounding Joe Biden before he withdrew from the 2024 presidential race.
Biden faced mounting questions over his age and public performance following his debate against Trump.
His performance intensified concerns inside the Democratic Party and was followed by weeks of pressure from Democratic lawmakers, donors and other political figures.
Biden ultimately ended his reelection campaign.
The episode became a major moment in the debate over whether reporters and political leaders had adequately addressed concerns about Biden earlier.
Biden Later Rejected Claims of Decline
Biden defended his record during a later appearance on “The View,” rejecting reports that he had experienced significant cognitive decline while serving as president.
“They are wrong,” Biden said when discussing those claims.
Former first lady Jill Biden also defended her husband during the appearance.
She argued that many of the people criticizing Biden had not witnessed his daily workload inside the White House.
Jill Biden described her husband working long hours, reviewing briefing materials and continuing conversations with staff late into the evening.
Her argument was that Americans did not always see the work taking place behind closed doors.
The Larger Debate Over Media Standards
The confrontation between Behar and her co-hosts raises a broader issue that extends beyond either Trump or Biden: how should journalists cover questions involving the age and health of presidents?
Presidents face enormous demands, and Americans naturally pay close attention to their public appearances, schedules and ability to carry out the responsibilities of office.
At the same time, television commentary and political speculation are not substitutes for verified medical information.
That distinction becomes especially important when discussions involve candidates or presidents from opposing political parties.
For many Americans, the central issue is consistency.
If presidential health, stamina and age are considered legitimate areas of scrutiny, voters may reasonably expect comparable journalistic standards regardless of which party controls the White House.
Behar clearly believes Trump is receiving different treatment.
Her own colleagues, however, demonstrated that even among frequent Trump critics, there is disagreement over whether her claim matches the amount of attention he actually receives.
And Haines’ simple reminder may have been the most revealing moment of the entire exchange:
