In a recent interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time,” sparking outrage from many Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Musk, who has been influential in both business and political spheres, expressed his belief that the U.S. government, particularly its social programs like Social Security, operates similarly to fraudulent pyramid schemes, relying on the contributions of new participants rather than legitimate investments to keep the system running.
Social Security, which was created in 1935, is a federal program designed to provide retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to eligible workers and their families. With the U.S. national debt surpassing $36 trillion, reforming or cutting wasteful programs like Social Security is seen by many as necessary to ensure future financial stability.
However, Democrats have fiercely defended the program, labeling Musk’s remarks as harmful to seniors and vulnerable Americans. They argue that Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme but a promise that hardworking citizens have paid into throughout their lives.
