So Kamala Harris is just stealing Trump’s 2024 entire playbook now?

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing criticism from conservatives and critics alike for seemingly stealing former President Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on tips received by service industry workers. This controversy comes in light of a recent Biden-Harris administration initiative aimed at tightening tax compliance on tips.

James Blair, Trump’s campaign political director, took to social media to highlight what he views as Harris’ opportunism. On X (formerly Twitter), Blair noted, “Let’s remember that #CopyCatKamala’s administration just last year introduced a new program to enforce taxes on tips. She could end it now, but she won’t, because her promises are empty!”

Blair’s comments were in response to Harris’s recent remarks at a Las Vegas rally, where she pledged to support the elimination of taxes on tips if she were to become president. “When I am president, we will fight for working families by raising the minimum wage and removing taxes on tips for those in the service and hospitality industries,” Harris declared.

Earlier this summer, Trump made a similar commitment during a rally in Las Vegas, emphasizing his intent to abolish taxes on service industry tips if re-elected. “This is something I’ve been advocating for years,” Trump said. “Those who work hard and provide excellent service deserve to keep more of their earnings.”

Harris’s recent stance contrasts sharply with the Biden administration’s previous efforts, which included the introduction of the Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program last year. This program aimed to simplify tax reporting for tips, but it faced backlash from critics who argued it represented a tax burden on waitstaff and other tipped employees.

Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., voiced concerns about this approach, criticizing the IRS’s expansion under the Biden administration. “Washington’s problem is not a lack of revenue but a spending problem,” Kelly said. “The IRS’s increased scrutiny is targeting hardworking Americans who are just trying to provide for their families.”

Following Harris’s pledge to eliminate tip taxes, Trump accused her of merely copying his policy and criticized her motivations. “Kamala Harris, whose poll numbers are plummeting, has now decided to adopt my policy on tips,” Trump posted. “The difference is she won’t follow through—this is a Trump idea that she’s trying to use for political gain.”

The hashtag #CopyCatKamala quickly gained traction on social media, reflecting a broader sentiment among Trump supporters and critics of the Biden administration. As the political landscape shifts, particularly with President Biden’s recent withdrawal from the race, the debate over tax policies and their implications for working Americans remains a contentious issue.
