Senator JD Vance, R-Ohio, recently leveled serious accusations against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, suggesting that Walz has misled the public about his military service and veteran status. Vance made these remarks during a campaign rally in Detroit, where he responded to questions from reporters.
Vance began by addressing criticisms from Walz, who had allegedly criticized Vance’s educational background, highlighting Vance’s Ivy League education. Vance defended his achievements, emphasizing his journey from a modest background. “I come from a family where higher education was a rarity,” Vance explained. “I worked hard to put myself through college and law school. To me, that’s the essence of the American dream. It’s puzzling that Governor Walz would view my hard-earned success as something negative.”
Turning to Walz’s military service, Vance made a pointed criticism. “I served with honor in the Marine Corps when my country called upon me to go to Iraq. I fulfilled that duty with integrity,” Vance stated. “In contrast, when Tim Walz was called to serve, he chose to abandon his unit and avoid deployment. This has been a major issue among his former comrades, and it’s troubling that he would attempt to portray himself differently.”
Vance further criticized Walz’s stance on gun control, questioning the governor’s credibility on the issue. “Governor Walz has argued against allowing certain weapons on American streets, claiming they are meant for war. But when was Walz ever in combat? He left his unit before they were deployed to Iraq, so he has no firsthand experience with the realities of war. His attempts to leverage his dubious military service to justify restrictive gun policies are disingenuous,” Vance argued.
Additionally, Vance called for greater accountability from Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris, he noted, has avoided press inquiries since President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Former President Trump has criticized Harris for her lack of transparency, drawing a parallel with Biden’s own low-profile campaign strategy.
