Here’s what Macron had to say.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently revealed that he advised former President Donald Trump to “proceed with caution” while navigating negotiations to end Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. He noted that while a ceasefire is “feasible” and may even be reached within weeks, it is crucial to ensure the peace agreement will guarantee long-term stability and the security of Europe.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Special Report, Macron spoke about his recent meeting with Trump at the White House. He emphasized the importance of substantial security measures for Ukraine, as well as for Europe and France. Macron urged Trump to collaborate closely with European leaders to develop a comprehensive strategy that ensures peace can be maintained after the conflict.
Macron’s warning stemmed from the failures of a ceasefire deal from 2014, which Russia violated repeatedly under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin. He expressed his concern that, without strong deterrence and proper enforcement, any agreement made with Russia could ultimately collapse, as it did with the previous truce. He stated, “In 2014, we had a cease-fire with Russia, and it was violated every time. We didn’t react.”
Despite these concerns, Macron suggested a possible pathway to peace, beginning with a ceasefire followed by negotiations on security guarantees, territorial issues, and long-term reconstruction. The French leader also highlighted the importance of U.S. involvement in supporting Ukraine, especially if European peacekeepers are sent to the region. He pointed out that if Russia breaches a truce, it would serve as clear evidence that Moscow is not serious about peace.
Macron also suggested that one way to ensure U.S. commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty would be by securing rights to Ukraine’s valuable mineral resources, which could significantly benefit the U.S. economy. This, he argued, could provide the necessary backing for both Ukraine and European security.
As discussions continue, Macron remains cautiously optimistic that a truce can be reached, with a final peace deal achievable if the U.S., Ukraine, and Europe are in agreement. It’s clear that careful strategy and robust guarantees are necessary to secure lasting peace in the region.
