Trump Blasts US ally for Refusing to Increase Defense Spending

President Donald J. Trump didn’t hold back during Wednesday’s NATO summit, sharply criticizing Spain for rejecting a bold new plan to dramatically boost defense spending across the alliance.

During a press conference at the summit, Trump called out Spain for refusing to support NATO’s new goal of raising military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035—a significant increase from the previous 2% standard. The initiative, championed by many, is widely credited to Trump’s years of pushing NATO allies to pay their fair share.

“What Spain is doing is disgraceful,” Trump told a Spanish reporter. “They’re the only nation refusing to step up. They’re insisting on sticking with just 2%.”

Trump Suggests Economic Pressure May Follow

In typical Trump fashion, the former—and possibly future—Commander-in-Chief didn’t mince words. He made it clear that Spain’s refusal to contribute more could come at a price.

“Maybe they’ll pay twice as much in a trade deal,” Trump said, referring to upcoming U.S. negotiations with the European Union, of which Spain is a member.

Trump has consistently used trade leverage to advance America’s interests—both economically and strategically. His America First approach has resonated with millions of working-class and patriotic Americans who are tired of footing the bill for foreign countries.

“I do like Spain,” Trump added. “But it’s unfair. They’re not pulling their weight.”

A Shift in Tone on NATO – Thanks to Trump

Interestingly, despite his pointed words for Spain, Trump expressed a new level of appreciation for the NATO alliance. After years of blasting member nations for relying on U.S. defense, he seemed encouraged by recent commitments.

“I’m leaving with a new perspective,” Trump said. “These leaders truly care about their nations. This isn’t a one-sided deal—we’re here to help them defend what matters.”

This is a major development for the future of NATO. For decades, American taxpayers have subsidized European security while many NATO countries fell short of their obligations. Trump has long warned that the U.S. might reconsider coming to the defense of nations that fail to meet basic spending commitments.

Now, with defense budgets rising and allies finally stepping up, it appears Trump’s hardline approach is producing real results.

Trump’s America First Leadership Still Making Waves

For years, President Trump has been the only world leader willing to challenge the global status quo and demand fairness in international alliances. Whether it’s NATO, trade deals, or border security, Trump continues to put American interests first.

And as the world watches the 2024 election cycle and beyond, it’s clear his bold leadership still carries global impact.
