Republicans are not happy.
In a recent discussion on 77WABC radio, former New York Governor George Pataki expressed deep concern about the growing trend of sanctuary policies in cities and states that defy federal immigration law. Pataki, speaking with businessman John Catsimatidis, drew a striking comparison between today’s sanctuary cities and the Confederate states that resisted federal authority during the Civil War. He warned that such actions undermine the rule of law, which is essential for the preservation of our Union.
Pataki’s comments came in response to questions about the state of New York City, where sanctuary policies have become increasingly prominent under Mayor Eric Adams. He pointed out that these policies, which shield illegal immigrants from federal enforcement, are essentially a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution, which mandates that all states and cities uphold federal laws. “We fought a Civil War over this,” Pataki said, emphasizing that no city or state has the right to ignore federal laws that are designed to protect the nation’s sovereignty and ensure public safety.
Both Pataki and Catsimatidis agreed that President Donald Trump has been a strong voice against sanctuary cities, and they suggested that a tough stance on this issue is crucial for the country’s future. Catsimatidis even quipped that Trump had “put his foot down” against these policies, to which Pataki responded that it’s time for the federal government to take decisive action. He proposed that the Trump administration should cut off federal funding to cities like New York and Los Angeles unless they comply with federal immigration laws. This, Pataki argued, would be a necessary step to restore respect for the rule of law and bring the country together.
Pataki also highlighted the challenge posed by New York’s deeply entrenched Democratic leadership, including Governor Kathy Hochul, who has flip-flopped on immigration policies. Initially opposed to granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, Hochul reversed her stance once she became governor. While she claims to support enforcing immigration laws, her actions, including her recent remarks about aiding federal immigration authorities, suggest a more complicated position.
Pataki’s broader point is clear: Sanctuary cities are a dangerous trend that threaten the stability of our nation. He urged that federal leadership, starting with President Trump, must enforce immigration laws without exception to protect American citizens and preserve the nation’s unity.
