Ocasio-Cortez’s 2028 Run Canceled?

Here’s what was said.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville believes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) hopes of winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 face a major obstacle.

During an interview with Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren on Thursday, Carville argued that Ocasio-Cortez’s progressive political agenda is simply too far to the left to win the broad coalition needed to secure the Democratic nomination.

“The Democrats — not even in ’72 — never nominate the most liberal candidate,” Carville said. “That’s the fantasy of the right wing, that Democrats are going to nominate a socialist.”

Although Carville dismissed her presidential prospects, he made it clear he respects Ocasio-Cortez’s political skills.

“I think AOC is remarkably talented,” he said. “Her staff work is pristine, but she’s not going to have any chance.”

Carville Points to Key Democratic Voting Bloc

Carville said the Democratic nomination is ultimately decided by a core group of primary voters that he believes is unlikely to embrace Ocasio-Cortez’s brand of progressive politics.

“Remember who decides who the Democratic nominee is, and that is Southern Blacks,” Carville said. “And I got news for you — they’re not that liberal.”

The longtime Democratic strategist, who helped lead former President Bill Clinton to victory in 1992, suggested that the party has historically favored candidates viewed as more politically moderate.

Prediction Markets Tell a Different Story

Despite Carville’s skepticism, betting markets show Ocasio-Cortez remains one of the leading contenders in early 2028 Democratic presidential speculation.

Kalshi currently gives Ocasio-Cortez roughly a 15% chance of winning the Democratic nomination, placing her behind California Gov. Gavin Newsom at about 20% and slightly ahead of Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA).

Polymarket paints a similar picture, with Newsom leading the field while Ossoff narrowly edges Ocasio-Cortez in the latest odds.

Growing Debate Inside the Democratic Party

Carville has become an increasingly outspoken critic of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

Following several victories by progressive and democratic socialist candidates in recent Democratic primaries, he urged party leaders to publicly distance themselves from socialist candidates during a Fox News appearance last month.

“I think the Democrats need to stand up and say this is not who we are,” Carville said. “We do not determine who you can date or not date. That is your own business.”

What It Means for 2028

While the 2028 presidential race remains years away, Carville’s comments highlight a growing divide within the Democratic Party over its future direction. As progressive leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continue to gain national attention, establishment Democrats remain divided over whether the party should move further left or nominate a candidate with broader appeal.

The debate is likely to intensify as potential contenders begin positioning themselves for what could become one of the most closely watched Democratic primary battles in years.
