Here’s what happened.
Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is under renewed public scrutiny after authorities say he was involved in a hit-and-run collision Friday in California’s Napa County.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred in Yountville, a well-known Napa Valley destination famous for its vineyards and tourism. Authorities say the 86-year-old was behind the wheel of his brown convertible when it collided with a legally parked vehicle, leaving behind substantial property damage.
Thankfully, officials reported that no one was injured.
Witness Reported The Crash
Authorities say a witness observed the collision and immediately called 911 after seeing the vehicle leave the scene.
Deputies quickly began searching the area and located Paul Pelosi approximately one-quarter mile away. His vehicle reportedly showed heavy front-end damage consistent with the collision.
During the investigation, Pelosi reportedly told deputies he realized he had struck something but said he was uncertain exactly when it happened or what had caused the damage.
Investigators documented the incident and continued gathering evidence before determining what charges, if any, should be recommended.
Alcohol Was Not A Factor
Law enforcement officials emphasized that alcohol did not appear to play any role in Friday’s accident.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies found no evidence that Pelosi had been drinking, and officials confirmed he had no alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.
That finding distinguishes the latest incident from his widely publicized 2022 DUI case, which also occurred in Napa County.
Possible Misdemeanor Charge
Because the crash involved only property damage and no injuries, deputies did not arrest Pelosi at the scene.
Instead, investigators are recommending prosecutors pursue a misdemeanor charge for allegedly leaving the scene of a property-damage accident.
The final decision now rests with prosecutors, who will review the evidence before determining whether formal charges should be filed.
DMV Review Could Affect Driving Privileges
In addition, the sheriff’s office referred Pelosi to the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a routine evaluation to determine whether he remains medically qualified to drive.
Officials noted that these referrals are common when elderly drivers are involved in traffic incidents. The review is intended to determine whether a motorist remains medically capable of operating a vehicle safely.
The process does not automatically result in the suspension of a driver’s license but can lead to additional testing or restrictions depending on the findings.
Previous Legal Troubles
Friday’s accident has also renewed attention on Pelosi’s previous legal issues.
In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence following another crash in Napa County.
As part of a plea agreement, Pelosi received probation, served a reduced jail sentence, completed mandatory DUI education classes, installed an ignition interlock device on his vehicle, and paid thousands of dollars in fines and victim restitution.
Those legal requirements were designed to address the earlier offense and reduce the risk of future incidents.
Victim Of Violent Home Attack
Later in 2022, Paul Pelosi was the victim of a violent home invasion at the Pelosis’ San Francisco residence.
During the attack, an intruder struck him multiple times with a hammer, causing serious injuries that required extensive medical treatment. The assault received national attention and prompted renewed discussions about the security of elected officials and their families.
Investigation Continues
At this point, investigators have completed their initial review of Friday’s collision, but the case remains active as prosecutors consider whether to file misdemeanor charges.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office had not issued a public statement regarding the incident as of Saturday afternoon.
The case is expected to remain in the spotlight as authorities determine the next legal steps and the California DMV completes its review of Paul Pelosi’s driving status.
