Who would’ve imagined?

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah criticized President Biden’s handling of the border crisis, suggesting that former President Trump managed it more effectively. In a conversation on MSNBC’s “The Eleventh Hour with Stephanie Ruhle,” Romney expressed frustration with Biden’s approach.

“People have been vocal about the border issues throughout Joe Biden’s presidency,” Romney remarked. “He hasn’t made significant progress in addressing the border problem. This is a critical area where President Trump excelled. It’s perplexing why President Biden didn’t prioritize this from the start.”

Romney, clashing with Ruhle over Biden’s performance, argued that Trump’s past success with border policy might give him an edge due to Biden’s inaction.

“Trump used the border issue to his advantage in 2016, and he’s likely banking on it again,” said Romney, who himself was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012. “If I were in Biden’s position, I would have tackled this issue head-on. Instead, it seems like he’s handed it over to Trump.”

Earlier, Ruhle addressed the deep political divisions in the U.S. and asked Romney about Biden’s potential to unify the country, highlighting Biden’s legislative achievements.

“Unifying the country goes beyond delivering great speeches,” Romney stated. “It involves being transparent about the challenges and presenting honest solutions.”

Ruhle countered, “Biden isn’t just making speeches. He’s enacted significant legislation, such as the infrastructure law and the CHIPS Act, which are boosting job creation and manufacturing.”

Although Romney acknowledged Biden’s accomplishments, he emphasized unresolved issues like the border crisis and inflation.

“Inflation remains a concern as prices have risen compared to the past. Beating inflation doesn’t mean prices drop; it means they stabilize, which is happening. However, people still feel the pinch of higher costs,” he explained.

The debate on border policy effectiveness persists, but Romney contended, “This wasn’t an issue under Trump. Despite some controversial measures, we didn’t see the influx of illegal immigration we’re witnessing now under Biden. Biden should have taken decisive actions, even those that might face legal challenges, to strengthen his position. Instead, the American public is looking for alternatives.”

Ruhle responded by noting that Biden and Congress have developed solutions, which were obstructed by Trump. “Biden can now present these efforts to the American people,” she concluded.
