Democrats are all coming to their senses.
President-elect Donald Trump recently expressed positive remarks about Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania after their meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Trump described Fetterman as a “commonsense person” who doesn’t align strictly with either liberal or conservative ideologies. Trump noted that Fetterman’s practical approach to issues was refreshing and highlighted the senator’s independent mindset, which he found admirable.
Fetterman, who was the first Senate Democrat to meet with Trump after his victory, traveled to the president-elect’s Palm Beach resort. This meeting occurred as numerous Republican lawmakers also visited to engage with Trump. The discussions between Trump and Fetterman were described as both “fascinating” and productive, touching on a variety of key issues such as U.S. Steel’s future, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Israel’s role in global politics. They even discussed the potential for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, showcasing a wide-ranging conversation on both domestic and international matters.
Fetterman, who emphasized his role as a senator for all Pennsylvanians, stated that he accepted Trump’s invitation because he believes in engaging with people across the political spectrum. He made it clear that his goal was to represent all constituents, not just those in his party. Fetterman also signaled that he is open to supporting some of Trump’s Cabinet nominees, including Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, signaling potential for bipartisan cooperation.
In addition, Fetterman co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, a bill aimed at curbing crime by illegal immigrants. The bill gained traction in the Senate, passing an initial vote with support from both Democrats and Republicans. This willingness to work across party lines suggests that Fetterman and Trump may find common ground on crucial issues moving forward, especially as both aim to address the challenges facing the nation in a unified way.
