This move has rocked Washington.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday that she will step down from her position in President Donald Trump’s administration following a serious health diagnosis involving her husband.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard revealed that her husband, Abraham, had recently been diagnosed with a rare and severe type of bone cancer. She said the difficult diagnosis will require her full attention in the months ahead, leading her to step away from public service so she can remain by his side throughout his treatment and recovery journey.

Her resignation will officially take effect on June 30.

President Trump responded to the announcement with a message of support, praising Gabbard for her service and wishing her husband a speedy recovery. Trump described Gabbard as a strong leader who played an important role inside his administration during a time of major political and national security challenges.

The president also confirmed that Deputy Director Aaron Lukas will serve as acting Director of National Intelligence until a permanent replacement is selected.

Gabbard became one of the most recognizable figures in the intelligence community during her tenure. A former congresswoman and military veteran, she brought a different perspective to the role compared to many previous intelligence chiefs.

Supporters praised her willingness to challenge Washington institutions and push for greater transparency inside the federal government. Critics, however, often questioned some of her foreign policy positions and past comments regarding intelligence matters.

During her leadership at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Gabbard focused heavily on declassification efforts, internal reviews, and reforms aimed at increasing public trust in intelligence agencies.

Her office released documents tied to investigations surrounding the 2016 election and allegations of political bias within parts of the intelligence community. Republicans frequently praised those efforts, arguing they helped reveal how intelligence processes may have been influenced by politics during previous administrations.

Gabbard also launched initiatives designed to review alleged government overreach and examine concerns about the politicization of federal agencies. Among her most discussed actions was the revocation of security clearances for dozens of former intelligence officials accused of improperly influencing public debates involving national security matters.

Democrats remained sharply critical of several of her actions while she served in office. Sen. Mark Warner said the intelligence community must remain independent and focused on objective analysis regardless of political pressure from either party.

At the same time, many Republican lawmakers applauded Gabbard’s leadership style and her emphasis on transparency. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley thanked her publicly for assisting congressional oversight efforts and helping increase access to government records tied to high-profile investigations.

Gabbard’s departure comes amid continued changes inside the Trump administration’s national security leadership team. Several senior officials connected to homeland security, immigration enforcement, and intelligence operations have also left their positions in recent months.

For many conservatives, Gabbard became a key figure in efforts to reform government agencies and restore confidence in federal institutions. Her resignation now leaves a major vacancy inside one of Washington’s most powerful national security offices.

As attention turns toward who could become the next permanent intelligence chief, Gabbard says her immediate priority will be standing beside her husband and helping her family navigate the difficult road ahead.
