Here’s what some Republicans think could happen.
As global energy prices continue climbing amid instability in the Middle East, some Republicans believe Greenland could become an unexpected solution to America’s growing energy concerns.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, who is serving as a special envoy for President Donald Trump to Greenland, said this week that the Arctic territory holds enormous untapped energy potential that could help stabilize oil markets and reduce dependence on volatile foreign regions.
During an interview Friday, Landry explained that Greenland’s natural resources could play a major role in easing pressure on global oil supplies at a time when energy costs are surging for American families and businesses.
“Greenland could be exporting 2 million barrels of oil a day,” Landry said. “Think about what that would mean for energy prices and global stability.”
The comments come as disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes — continue driving uncertainty in international energy markets. Analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region could lead to even higher fuel costs and inflation concerns worldwide.
Oil prices have already jumped sharply in recent days, with both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate reaching levels not seen in months. Rising gas prices remain a major concern for millions of Americans, especially retirees and working families living on fixed budgets.
Landry argued that expanding energy development in Greenland could help provide a more reliable long-term alternative while strengthening America’s position in global energy production.
Supporters of President Donald Trump say the administration’s focus on domestic production and strategic energy partnerships reflects an “America First” approach designed to protect consumers from overseas instability.
“The president is the only leader in decades who has seriously focused on Greenland’s strategic importance,” Landry said during the interview.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s economic and national security value over the years, pointing to its location, mineral reserves, and energy potential. Conservatives have increasingly argued that Arctic development could become critical as the United States competes with foreign powers for energy and natural resources.
Landry recently completed a three-day visit to Greenland as part of his diplomatic role. According to the governor, President Trump encouraged him to strengthen relationships and explore future opportunities for cooperation.
However, some Greenlandic officials pushed back on discussions involving greater U.S. influence in the territory. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reaffirmed that Greenland’s future should remain in the hands of its people.
Even so, many conservatives believe Greenland could eventually emerge as a key piece of America’s long-term energy strategy — particularly as voters grow increasingly frustrated with rising fuel prices, inflation, and global uncertainty.
For supporters of Trump’s energy agenda, the message is simple: produce more energy at home and rely less on unstable regions abroad.
