This move has drawn criticism from both sides.
In a major pro-life victory, the Trump administration has officially revoked a Biden-era policy that allowed abortions to be performed using taxpayer dollars through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The rule, quietly implemented by the Biden-Harris administration in 2022, had authorized abortion procedures and counseling for veterans and certain VA beneficiaries—sparking outrage from lawmakers and millions of Americans who oppose public funding of abortion.
But that policy is now history.
On Friday, the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a formal announcement that it will once again restrict abortion access under the VA health benefits package—restoring decades of precedent that protected taxpayers and honored the mission of caring for our nation’s heroes.
“We take this action to ensure VA provides only essential medical services to America’s veterans—not elective procedures that violate federal law and taxpayer trust,” the VA stated in its official release.
From 1999 until 2022, the VA excluded abortion from its covered services. That changed when Biden’s VA Secretary imposed a radical new policy—with zero congressional approval.
President Trump’s administration has now reversed that overreach.
🔒 Taxpayer Dollars Protected. Pro-Life Values Restored.
Veterans will still receive life-saving care in emergencies—such as ectopic pregnancies or miscarriage complications—but elective abortions and counseling will no longer be funded under the VA’s standard health plan.
Conservative lawmakers applauded the reversal.
“It was wrong for Biden’s VA to defy the law and force taxpayers to pay for abortions,” said House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Bost (R-IL), joined by Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Morgan Luttrell, Derrick Van Orden, Keith Self, and Tom Barrett.
“We pushed back hard. Today, we got results. VA health care should be focused on veterans—not Washington’s culture wars.”
💬 The Left Melts Down Over Policy Shift
Naturally, far-left activists and pro-abortion groups erupted over the decision.
Katie O’Connor, an abortion lobbyist with the National Women’s Law Center, called the reversal a “direct attack” on women veterans—ignoring the fact that life-saving care remains fully protected.
“This move only deepens the crisis,” she claimed in a Friday statement, accusing Trump of denying reproductive rights to women who served.
But what the Biden administration called “health care,” many Americans rightly see as a misuse of taxpayer money and a violation of the VA’s core mission.
🗽 Trump Administration Defends Veterans—And the Constitution
This decision comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s historic overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which returned abortion law to the states and reined in unelected bureaucracies from pushing radical policies.
By restoring the VA’s traditional focus on true medical care—not politics—the Trump administration has once again put America’s veterans and taxpayers first.
For millions of Americans who believe in life, law, and limited government, this is a major win—and a clear reminder that elections have consequences.
