Americans wouldn’t believe this just a couple of years ago.
In a shocking twist in New York’s mayoral race, President Donald Trump and top allies of Rudy Giuliani are signaling that Democrat Andrew Cuomo may be the only candidate strong enough to stop the radical socialist movement threatening to take over America’s largest city.
Giuliani’s Allies Break Ranks
Longtime Giuliani confidants are abandoning Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Joe Lhota, Giuliani’s former deputy mayor and 2013 GOP mayoral candidate, declared:
“It’s a choice between a proven manager, a socialist, and a fruit loop. Of course I’m going to be with Andrew.”
Anthony Carbonetti, Giuliani’s former chief of staff, agreed. He warned that Sliwa cannot win and risks handing City Hall to socialist Zohran Mamdani.
“I don’t want a socialist in charge of a $116 billion city budget,” Carbonetti said, slamming Mamdani’s plan to make buses free — a policy critics say will turn them into “rolling homeless shelters.”
A Republican Attorney General Defects
Even Michael Mukasey, a Republican and former U.S. Attorney General under President George W. Bush, has sided with Cuomo.
“The first rule for Republicans is that our city should not be put at risk of irreversible damage,” Mukasey wrote. “The most viable alternative to Mamdani is Andrew Cuomo.”
His warning comes after Mayor Eric Adams’ sudden withdrawal, leaving the field wide open.
Trump Drops a Bombshell on Fox News
President Trump himself raised eyebrows by casting doubt on Sliwa’s chances.
“I’m a Republican, but let’s be honest — Curtis just isn’t ready for the big stage,” Trump said during an appearance on Fox & Friends.
Trump went further, saying Cuomo may have a better shot at defeating Mamdani — whom he blasted as a “communist.”
Socialism’s Grip on New York City?
With polls showing Mamdani leading but under 50%, conservatives fear that a split vote could hand New York City — and its $116 billion budget — to a socialist who would reshape the city’s future.
Giuliani himself has yet to endorse a candidate, but Trump’s blunt warning is already fueling debate among Republicans:
- Should conservatives unite behind Cuomo to stop socialism?
- Or should the GOP stay loyal to Sliwa even if it means defeat?
For voters worried about crime, chaos, and socialist policies, the stakes couldn’t be higher. New York’s future — and perhaps the direction of America’s largest city — is now on the line.
