A powerful new push is underway to make Easter Monday a nationally recognized federal holiday—and it’s gaining momentum among pro-faith, pro-family conservatives.
Led by Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) and Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV), the legislation would officially recognize the Monday after Easter Sunday as a federal holiday—offering millions of Americans a long-overdue three-day weekend rooted in tradition, family, and Christian values.
“This is about honoring America’s Christian roots and giving families the time they need to reconnect and reflect,” said Schmitt.
🇺🇸 Why Easter Monday Matters Now More Than Ever
81% of Americans celebrated Easter in 2023, according to the National Retail Federation. And yet, Easter Monday is not a federal holiday—despite being recognized across the Western world, including in:
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- Much of Western Europe
“This isn’t a radical idea,” Schmitt said on X (formerly Twitter). “It’s about aligning with a tradition that has shaped Western civilization and honoring faith in public life.”
💰 Economic Benefits: Billions on the Line
Easter already contributes $15 billion annually to the U.S. economy through retail, travel, and events. Experts estimate that formalizing Easter Monday as a holiday could increase that by 10–15%, adding up to $2 billion in additional economic activity.
That means more opportunities for small businesses, travel, and family-centered commerce—just in time for spring.
🙏 Restoring Faith and Tradition in a Changing America
Let’s be honest—faith-based traditions have been sidelined in today’s political climate. But Easter remains a sacred observance in the Christian world, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“The passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important event in human history,” said Rep. Moore.
“‘Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld.’”
Right now, Christmas Day is the only religious federal holiday. Schmitt and Moore say it’s time to correct that.
🛠️ How This Bill Would Work
- Senate Bill 1426 was introduced by Sen. Schmitt and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
- If passed, Easter Monday would become the 12th official federal holiday, giving families across America a much-needed, faith-filled day of rest.
- The holiday would fall on the Monday immediately after Easter, which shifts each year between March 22 and April 25.
🧭 Federal Holiday Gap: April to May
Currently, there is no federal holiday between Presidents Day in February and Memorial Day at the end of May. That’s nearly three months without a national day off.
Easter Monday would:
- Close that gap
- Boost worker morale
- Offer spiritual reflection time
- Strengthen families and communities
“It’s pro-family. It’s pro-faith. It’s pro-worker,” Schmitt emphasized.
🧠 Why It Resonates with Conservatives
This proposal touches on core conservative values:
- Family unity
- Religious liberty
- Respect for heritage
- Support for working Americans
At a time when Washington is often pushing secular agendas, this bill is a refreshing return to the traditions that built this nation.
🔍 The Bottom Line
The proposed Easter Monday holiday isn’t just symbolic—it’s a strategic, meaningful step toward reviving Christian traditions, honoring America’s cultural roots, and supporting families in today’s hectic world.
If passed, it would offer spiritual renewal, economic opportunity, and a sorely needed pause in the federal calendar—all while reinforcing the values that matter most to conservative Americans.
