Even Trump’s biggest hater is now admitting the shocking truth.
On Saturday, Senator Mitt Romney criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, accusing him of engaging in “political malpractice” by pressing criminal charges against former President Donald Trump.
“Bragg should have resolved the case against Trump through standard procedures, but instead he chose a political path,” stated Romney, a Republican from Utah and a vocal critic of Trump, in an interview with his biographer, Atlantic writer McKay Coppins.
“Although Bragg may have temporarily succeeded, he might have compromised his long-term political strategy,” Romney continued. “Democrats are trying to extinguish the Trump controversy with gasoline. This is a clear case of political malpractice.”
Romney also recently expressed confusion over President Biden’s decision not to pardon Trump when federal indictments were first issued. “He should have done everything in his power to prevent the indictments from advancing,” Romney commented last month.
“If I were President Biden, I would have immediately issued a pardon once the Justice Department brought forth the indictments,” Romney told MSNBC’s “The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle.” “It would have positioned Biden as the bigger person who extended grace to his opponent.”
At 77, Romney is set to retire at the conclusion of his term next January. He supported both impeachment efforts against Trump in 2020 and 2021.
On Thursday, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records, related to an attempt to influence the 2016 presidential election. The charges stem from a $130,000 payment made by Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, to adult actress Stormy Daniels, looking to silence her about an alleged affair with Trump.
Trump, also 77, has vowed to appeal the verdict, declaring he is “honored” to be in the legal battle and emphasizing that he is “fighting for our Constitution.”
