A White House press assistant is pushing back after an online political journalist used her appearance to criticize the way she handled reporters during President Donald Trump’s recent trip to Ireland.
Ellie Acra, who works with the White House press operation, responded Tuesday after journalist Aaron Rupar shared video of her directing reporters and photographers away from Trump and his family.
“BREAKING: I am a press wrangler actually wrangling!” Acra wrote on X.
Her response came after Rupar described her as a “blonde Trump flunkie” while sharing footage from the president’s departure from Ireland.
The remark quickly generated controversy, with White House officials and several journalists arguing that Acra was simply performing the responsibilities associated with her position.
White House Press Aide Responds
The video at the center of the dispute showed Acra attempting to move members of the press away as Trump prepared to leave Ireland.
Reporters had been questioning the president before Acra repeatedly indicated that the press availability had ended.
“Sorry, that’s what I’m told to do,” she could be heard saying before directing reporters to move along.
Rupar subsequently posted the footage on X and accused Acra of “literally shoving photographers away from Trump.”
However, the footage circulating online did not provide a clear, unobstructed view establishing the extent of any physical contact between Acra and the photographers.
That distinction quickly became part of the dispute.

What Is a White House Press Wrangler?
The controversy also raised questions about Acra’s responsibilities.
Press wranglers help manage reporters, photographers and television crews covering presidential events. Their duties can include moving the press into designated areas, coordinating access and signaling when a press availability has concluded.
The job can become particularly visible during presidential travel, when security requirements and tight schedules require reporters to move quickly between locations.
Several journalists familiar with White House operations argued that Acra’s actions were consistent with those responsibilities.
Fox News Digital reporter Cameron Arcand described the press-wrangler position as an important part of maintaining media access while keeping presidential events on schedule.
Daily Wire reporter Mary Margaret Olohan also criticized Rupar’s characterization of Acra, calling his post “ignorant” and “misogynistic.”
“Blonde” Remark Sparks Backlash
Rupar’s decision to describe Acra by her hair color became another major part of the controversy.
Critics questioned why her appearance was relevant to whether she had properly performed her job.
The White House’s Rapid Response account also defended Acra, arguing that she was doing her job as a press wrangler.
The administration’s response included considerably sharper personal criticism of Rupar, demonstrating how quickly the disagreement escalated beyond the original video.
Not everyone criticizing Rupar came from conservative media.
Former Obama administration official Stefanie Feldman also criticized the post, writing that Acra was acting within the normal boundaries of her job while arguing that attacks of that nature distracted from substantive criticism of the Trump administration.
Who Is Aaron Rupar?
Rupar is an independent political journalist who has developed a large social-media following by posting clips of Trump and other political figures.
He has openly identified himself as a liberal Democrat and frequently publishes commentary critical of Trump and his administration.
That history has also made Rupar a frequent target of criticism from Trump supporters and White House officials.
The Acra dispute came shortly after another online confrontation between Rupar and the White House involving Trump executive aide Natalie Harp.
Political Fight Spreads Beyond Trump
The episode illustrates how political disputes increasingly extend beyond elected officials themselves.
Presidential aides, communications employees and other White House staff members can quickly become the focus of national attention when clips from political events spread across social media.
In Acra’s case, footage of what her defenders characterized as routine press-management duties generated a much larger argument over media behavior, professionalism and whether a female staff member’s appearance had any relevance to criticism of her work.
Acra ultimately answered the controversy with a short message of her own.
She was a press wrangler, she indicated, and she was doing exactly what the position required.
