Trump Impeachment Begins

Democrats are preparing to target Trump again.

Calls to impeach President Donald Trump are emerging from the Democratic Party’s progressive wing following the administration’s recent operation in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of longtime Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

The U.S. action, which included targeted strikes in Caracas, has sparked sharp partisan disagreement in Washington. While Republicans have largely praised the move as a decisive step against a hostile regime, several left-leaning Democrats are now arguing the operation violated constitutional limits and should trigger impeachment proceedings.

Rep. Delia Ramirez, a member of the progressive House faction often referred to as the “Squad,” criticized the administration in a social media post over the weekend. Ramirez accused the White House of exceeding its authority and urged Congress to intervene.

She called for passage of a War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar, which would restrict the president’s ability to conduct further military or security operations involving Venezuela without congressional approval. Ramirez also stated that impeachment should be considered.

Rep. Dan Goldman echoed those concerns, arguing that Congress was not sufficiently briefed prior to the operation. Goldman said bypassing lawmakers to initiate what he described as a war-level action could constitute a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

“This type of action raises serious constitutional questions,” Goldman said in a statement, urging lawmakers to reassert congressional authority.

Rep. April McClain Delaney of Maryland also weighed in, writing that launching or managing another country without a declaration of war could be grounds for impeachment, while noting that Democratic leadership would need to carefully consider whether impeachment is the most effective course.

Meanwhile, California Democrat Eric Swalwell did not rule out supporting impeachment when questioned by reporters, according to local media outlets.

Progressive candidates outside of Congress joined the criticism as well. Illinois congressional hopeful Kat Abughazaleh posted online calling on lawmakers to halt the conflict and pursue impeachment proceedings against the president.

Republicans, however, have pushed back forcefully against the impeachment talk. GOP lawmakers argue the operation was a limited action aimed at removing a dangerous dictator accused of corruption, narco-trafficking, and widespread human rights abuses—not a full-scale war requiring congressional authorization.

Several Republican leaders have also described the mission as a law-enforcement-style operation rather than a traditional military campaign, saying advance notice to Congress was not legally required.

As Democrats debate their next steps, the impeachment calls underscore the deep political divide surrounding President Trump’s foreign policy decisions and the administration’s aggressive posture toward adversarial regimes in the Western Hemisphere.
