Here’s what Trump is thinking.
President Donald J. Trump turned heads again Sunday night—this time not with a political rally, but with a surprise appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup Final, where he mixed sports, diplomacy, and humor in true Trump fashion.
Speaking from MetLife Stadium, where Chelsea FC upset Paris Saint-Germain in a stunning 4-1 victory, Trump couldn’t help but crack a joke that’s now making headlines: suggesting he might sign an executive order to officially rename “soccer” to “football” in the United States.
“I think we could do that,” Trump told DAZN when asked if he’d consider the switch. “Makes sense. The rest of the world calls it that.”
Trump was invited to the championship event by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has maintained a strong working relationship with the 45th President. Trump noted the growing popularity of soccer in America and said it’s just one more sign that the country is surging under strong leadership.
“I was just in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE—everywhere I go, leaders say the same thing: ‘Your country was failing. Now you’re the hottest in the world,’” Trump said. “We were in bad shape under the last administration. Now, America’s respected again.”
Global Strength, Local Pride
Trump emphasized that sports—especially global ones like soccer—can be a powerful force for unity.
“It’s about connection. It’s about unity. This is the most international sport out there. It brings people together in a way nothing else can,” Trump explained.
Infantino has openly praised Trump for helping position the U.S. as a premier host for international sporting events. The United States is slated to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, with the final returning to MetLife Stadium.
In a lighthearted moment, Trump revealed that the original Club World Cup trophy gifted by Infantino in March now resides in the Oval Office—fitting perfectly with his signature gold décor.
A Nod to the Greats
When asked about his favorite soccer player of all time, Trump didn’t hesitate.
“Pelé,” he said. “I saw him play when I was a young guy. He was incredible. That probably gives away my age, but he’s still the greatest.”
For a President who once famously reshaped America’s economic, military, and energy strategies, Trump’s brief foray into sports commentary underscores a deeper message: that under strong leadership, even the games we play reflect our nation’s resurgence.
