Trump Changing Social Security, VA Benefits

Here’s what older Americans need to know.

Big news for millions of Americans: President Donald Trump has ordered major changes to how Social Security and Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits are paid. Beginning September 30, 2025, paper checks will largely disappear — replaced with faster, safer electronic payments.

This reform could affect retirees, veterans, and families who still rely on old-fashioned paper checks. Here’s what you need to know.

Trump’s Order Modernizes Social Security and VA Benefits

In March, President Trump signed an executive order to modernize federal payments, calling it “payments to and from America’s bank account.”

Paper checks, according to the order, are far more vulnerable — about 16 times more likely to be misplaced, stolen, or tampered with than digital payments. Moving to electronic deposits is designed to cut down on fraud, eliminate waste, and ensure seniors and veterans get their benefits quickly and securely.

What Changes on September 30

Starting this fall, most federal benefits will only be paid electronically. That includes:

  • Social Security payments
  • VA disability and pension checks
  • Other federal disbursements, including tax refunds

Accepted payment methods will include:

  • Direct deposit into your bank account
  • Prepaid debit cards
  • Digital wallets and real-time payment systems

What Retirees and Veterans Must Do

If you already receive Social Security or VA benefits by direct deposit, nothing changes. But if you still get paper checks, you must update your payment method before the September 30 deadline.

  • Log into your Social Security account and update direct deposit info.
  • Call or visit the VA benefits office to switch to electronic payments.
  • Work with your bank to set up direct deposit on your behalf.

Who Qualifies for Paper Check Exceptions?

Trump’s order allows very limited exceptions, such as:

  • Seniors or veterans without access to banking services.
  • Emergency payments where electronic transfers cause hardship.
  • Certain cases approved by the Treasury Department.

Currently, more than 99% of Social Security recipients already use direct deposit.

What This Means for Americans

President Trump’s reform ensures:

  • Stronger protection against fraud and theft.
  • Faster access to retirement and veterans’ benefits.
  • Lower costs to taxpayers by eliminating waste.

The order also applies to federal receipts — meaning if you owe taxes or student loan payments, mailing in a paper check may no longer be an option.

Bottom Line: Trump Secures Benefits for Seniors and Veterans

With Social Security and VA benefits now moving fully digital, President Trump is ensuring America’s seniors and heroes receive their money safely, securely, and on time.

For retirees and veterans, this change means peace of mind — knowing your benefits will always arrive directly in your account, without delay or risk.
