Here’s what Trump had to say.
President-elect Donald Trump has voiced his strong and unequivocal support for Rep. Mike Johnson, endorsing him as the next Speaker of the House ahead of next month’s critical vote. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Johnson as “a good, hard-working, religious man” who will prioritize “the right thing” for America and help the country “continue to WIN.” Trump’s endorsement comes as House Republicans face a pivotal moment in their efforts to lead the chamber effectively and maintain momentum in the fight against President Biden’s destructive policies.
Trump, ever the champion of common-sense conservatism, also issued a warning to his fellow Republicans. Reflecting on the GOP’s victorious 2024 campaign, Trump reminded his supporters of the party’s ability to win without relying on the expensive, ineffective tactics that Democrats used. “We ran a flawless campaign, spending far less and with money left over, while they poured billions into a sinking ship,” Trump wrote. “But it didn’t work, it was a disaster! Let’s not blow this great opportunity we have been given.”
The former president also took a moment to tout his historic victory in the 2024 election, emphasizing the seven swing states he flipped, the 317 electoral votes he secured, and his overwhelming popular vote victory. Trump didn’t shy away from pointing out the electoral challenges that occurred, particularly in California, where certification of results dragged on for weeks.
However, challenges within the GOP are already surfacing as Republicans prepare to vote on the next House speaker. A recent report indicated that as many as 10 Republicans may oppose Johnson’s bid. This comes after intense debates over government spending, with Republicans divided on a $1,500-page bill and a narrowly defeated alternative. The struggle highlighted the ongoing rifts within the party, especially when a government shutdown was averted only after a bill was passed with more Democrat votes than Republican support.
Trump’s endorsement of Johnson is especially significant given the slim Republican majority in the House. With only a five-seat advantage, every vote counts, and any infighting could jeopardize the GOP’s ability to lead effectively. Trump’s comments also serve as a reminder that the Republican Party must unite in order to fight the Biden administration’s radical agenda, including issues like immigration, where divisions have also surfaced.
In addition, Trump took aim at the failed 2024 Democratic campaign, blasting Vice President Kamala Harris for wasting millions on celebrity endorsements. He pointed to the staggering sums spent on figures like Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, and Reverend Al Sharpton, calling out the lack of accountability and the wasteful spending. While Harris’ campaign has denied paying Beyoncé, campaign finance records confirm significant payouts to Winfrey’s production company and Sharpton’s nonprofit.
As the GOP moves forward in 2024, Trump’s message remains clear: Republicans must stay united, focused on winning, and committed to common-sense policies that put America first. The time to deliver is now.
