The Trump White House just sent a blunt message to one of America’s closest allies: stop helping Russia or pay the price.
Tariffs Doubled on Indian Goods
President Donald Trump announced that tariffs on Indian imports will now skyrocket to 50 percent, punishing New Delhi for continuing to buy Russian oil. Trump said India’s trade with Moscow is effectively fueling Vladimir Putin’s war machine in Ukraine.
The new penalties — which take effect next week — come on top of the 25 percent “reciprocal tax” already in place. The administration’s stance is clear: no nation can claim to be a U.S. partner while at the same time funding America’s adversaries.
Navarro: India Acting as Putin’s “Clearinghouse”
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro pulled no punches in a fiery op-ed for the Financial Times. He accused India of serving as a “global clearinghouse” for Russian oil, saying the profits go straight into Putin’s war chest.
Navarro argued that India’s heavy reliance on Russian oil is “self-serving and damaging to global stability,” warning that if New Delhi expects to be regarded as a true U.S. ally, it must begin to demonstrate that role in practice.
Navarro praised Trump’s two-pronged tariff policy, saying it will hit India where it hurts most — its massive access to American markets.
India Defiant, Cries Hypocrisy
Indian officials have pushed back hard, accusing the Trump administration of hypocrisy. They argue that past U.S. governments encouraged energy deals with Russia, and point out that Europe still buys billions in Russian gas and oil.
A spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs argued that singling out India under these circumstances is “unwarranted and unfair,” stressing that the country will take whatever steps are needed to protect its economic security and national interests.
Trump Stands Firm With “America First”
The clash comes just as President Trump prepares to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and top European leaders after his historic summit with Vladimir Putin.
For conservatives, the showdown is another reminder of Trump’s no-nonsense foreign policy: protect American workers, punish bad trade partners, and put America First.
