The GOP is making sure our front lines of defense remain secured.
As Washington, D.C. faces looming funding deadlines, a Texas lawmaker is stepping up to ensure that our dedicated Border Patrol agents are not left behind if the government shuts down.
Rep. Monica De La Cruz, a Republican from Texas, is reintroducing the Pay Our Border Patrol and Customs Agents Act. This crucial legislation aims to guarantee that Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will receive their paychecks, even if a government shutdown occurs during the 2025 fiscal year.
The bill would specifically protect the pay and expenses of Border Patrol agents, as well as staff working at ports of entry through the Office of Field Operations. “Our Border Patrol agents do more than just protect our borders – they ensure our communities are safe,” De La Cruz said in a statement. She highlighted that under President Trump’s leadership, Border Patrol agents were able to effectively secure the border, with illegal crossings hitting record lows. “We cannot allow political gridlock to jeopardize the hard-earned paychecks of these brave men and women,” she added.
The bill, which already has 16 co-sponsors, is crucial in light of the current uncertainty over government funding. Congressional negotiators have already delayed a decision on FY 2025 funding twice, relying on temporary continuing resolutions. With the end of the fiscal year rapidly approaching, there is a real risk of a government shutdown, which could affect vital services, including Border Patrol operations.
If Congress does not reach an agreement by March 14, there could be consequences for federal employees, including Border Patrol agents. De La Cruz’s bill would prevent this, ensuring that those on the frontlines of securing our border are not left without a paycheck.
As leaders like President Trump and Vice President JD Vance continue to celebrate the significant reduction in border crossings since their administration took charge, it’s clear that Border Patrol agents play an essential role in keeping America safe. De La Cruz’s bill ensures that their service is recognized, especially in times of uncertainty.
