Miller has strongly denied all allegations made against him and insists the accusations are false. However, the ongoing legal dispute and increased media attention have added uncertainty to what Republicans hoped would be a straightforward reelection campaign.
Controversy Brings New Scrutiny
The political storm stems from a bitter divorce and child custody dispute between Miller and his former wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio.
Moreno has accused Miller of multiple incidents of domestic abuse during their marriage. Those allegations have been reported by several national news organizations and have become the focus of growing political attention in Washington.
Miller has repeatedly denied every accusation.
The Ohio congressman has filed a defamation lawsuit against his former wife and argues the claims are false and tied to their ongoing custody battle. He has also defended himself publicly on social media and says he intends to continue fighting the allegations in court.
A spokesperson for Miller noted that the court has continued allowing him joint custody of his daughter, arguing that credible evidence supporting the accusations would have resulted in a different outcome.

Democrats See A Political Opportunity
Although Republicans remain favored to hold the district, Democrats believe the controversy has created an opening that did not exist earlier in the election cycle.
Several respected election forecasters have downgraded the race over the past few months.
Inside Elections moved the district from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican.” The Cook Political Report also shifted its rating from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican,” while Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball recently lowered the race again, changing it from “Likely Republican” to “Leans Republican.”
Those changes have encouraged Democrats, who believe the combination of legal disputes, increased media coverage, and shifting political dynamics could make the race surprisingly competitive.
Republicans Continue Backing Miller
Despite calls from some Democrats for Miller to resign or face a House Ethics Committee investigation, Republican leaders have largely stood behind their colleague.
House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized that allegations alone should not determine a lawmaker’s future, pointing to the House Ethics Committee process that evaluates misconduct claims involving members of Congress.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also urged caution, describing the dispute as a family matter while expressing support for Miller and wishing the family well as the legal process continues.
Many Republicans argue that allegations should be thoroughly examined through the legal system before political conclusions are reached.

While Trump comfortably won the district during the last presidential election, Miller’s own victory was considerably narrower than Trump’s margin, signaling that the seat may not be as secure as many initially believed.

Brian Poindexter, an ironworker and city council member, has received support from both progressive and moderate Democrats, including backing from Sen. Bernie Sanders while also attracting support from organizations aligned with more centrist Democrats.
A campaign-sponsored poll released earlier this year showed Miller holding only a one-point advantage, with a significant number of voters still undecided.
Although internal campaign polling should always be viewed with caution, Democrats point to the survey as evidence the race may be much closer than expected.
Poindexter has largely avoided making Miller’s personal life the centerpiece of his campaign, instead focusing on policy differences while saying the allegations deserve appropriate review through the legal system.
Ethics Questions Continue
Several Democratic lawmakers have called for a formal House Ethics Committee investigation into Miller.
At this time, the Ethics Committee has not publicly announced any investigation involving the Ohio congressman.
