Here’s what happened.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is calling for Congress to investigate the white nationalist organization Patriot Front following the group’s large Independence Day demonstration in Washington, D.C., arguing that lawmakers should examine whether federal authorities handled the organization differently during the Biden administration.
Luna raised the issue after hundreds of Patriot Front members marched through the nation’s capital over the Fourth of July weekend, drawing national attention and renewed debate over domestic extremism, federal law enforcement priorities, and free speech.
Luna Questions FBI Priorities Under Biden
In a post on X, Luna questioned why Patriot Front allegedly escaped greater federal scrutiny despite becoming one of the country’s most recognizable extremist organizations.
“What I find odd about Patriot Front is how under Biden they were never investigated. Well funded. Never investigated,” Luna wrote.
She contrasted that with reports that federal authorities examined certain Catholic groups during the previous administration, arguing that Congress should determine whether federal agencies applied investigative resources fairly.
Luna suggested that the House Oversight Committee review the issue, saying lawmakers should examine the organization’s activities, funding, and any decisions made by federal agencies regarding investigations.
Her comments have added another chapter to the ongoing Republican criticism of how federal law enforcement prioritized domestic investigations over the past several years.
Patriot Front’s Washington March Sparks New Debate
The renewed attention follows a march involving roughly 400 Patriot Front members in Washington, D.C., during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Many of the marchers were dressed in coordinated outfits featuring khaki pants, navy-blue shirts, white masks, and matching hats as they carried flags through the streets of Washington, D.C. Several participants also held American flags upside down, drawing widespread attention and sparking debate across social media.
The demonstration quickly spread across social media, with lawmakers and commentators debating both the group’s message and how government officials should respond.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, Patriot Front has become one of the nation’s most visible white supremacist organizations and has been responsible for a large share of white supremacist propaganda distributed throughout the United States since 2019.
Trump Administration Officials Reject Extremist Views
Although members of the Trump administration rejected Patriot Front’s ideology, officials also emphasized that constitutional protections apply even to speech many Americans strongly oppose.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said he completely disagrees with the organization’s beliefs but defended the importance of protecting First Amendment rights.
Burgum said America’s commitment to free speech often means protecting expression that many citizens find offensive or reprehensible. While condemning the group’s views, he stopped short of saying whether President Donald Trump should personally issue a statement addressing the demonstration.
His comments reflected the longstanding constitutional debate between protecting free expression and confronting extremist movements.
Republican Lawmakers Distance Themselves From The Group
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) also condemned Patriot Front, making clear that he believes the organization does not represent either the Republican Party or the American people.
Speaking during the same CNN interview, Carter said America’s founding principles are rooted in equality and individual liberty, adding that Patriot Front’s ideology runs directly contrary to those values.
He stressed that Americans should not view the organization as representative of the conservative movement or the broader Republican Party.
Patriot Front’s Origins
Patriot Front was founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Researchers with George Washington University’s Program on Extremism say the group’s published ideology advocates the creation of a white ethnostate.
Since its founding, the organization has become known for organizing highly choreographed public demonstrations in cities across the country while distributing propaganda designed to attract publicity.
Civil rights organizations have continued to monitor the group’s activities, while lawmakers from both parties have repeatedly condemned its ideology.
Congressional Scrutiny Could Grow
Luna’s request for a congressional investigation could place renewed attention on how federal agencies identify, monitor, and investigate extremist organizations.
Republicans have increasingly questioned whether federal law enforcement applied investigative standards consistently during the Biden administration, while Democrats have argued that domestic extremist groups remain a serious national security concern.
Whether Congress ultimately opens a formal investigation remains to be seen, but Luna’s comments are likely to fuel continued debate over federal oversight, law enforcement priorities, and the government’s response to extremist organizations.
