President Donald Trump’s National Guard mission in Washington, D.C., appears to be entering a new phase after officials approved a $292 million housing contract that could keep thousands of Guard members stationed in the nation’s capital for years.
The National Guard announced Thursday that the agreement will provide up to 2,000 apartment-style housing units for service members serving in Washington. Officials say the project is the largest interagency lodging contract in National Guard history and is designed to provide a more cost-effective alternative to commercial hotels.
Massive Housing Deal Sparks Questions
The contract was awarded to lodging company Placemakr, which has previously partnered with Hilton on large residential hospitality projects.
While National Guard leaders describe the agreement as a money-saving measure, critics have focused on one notable detail: the announcement does not include a specific end date for the housing arrangement.
That omission has fueled speculation about how long the military presence in Washington could continue.
National Guard Could Remain Through 2029
Earlier this year, a National Guard official told The Hill that the Pentagon expects to maintain troops in Washington until Inauguration Day in January 2029, provided Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gives final approval.
If approved, the deployment would continue unless President Trump decides to change course.
Hegseth has publicly praised the Guard’s performance, thanking service members during a July visit for helping improve public safety throughout the nation’s capital.
Mission Supports Trump’s Crime Reduction Plan
The deployment is part of Executive Order 14252, which created the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.
For nearly 11 months, National Guard personnel have worked alongside law enforcement as part of the administration’s effort to reduce crime, assist emergency responders, and improve conditions across Washington.
According to the National Guard, troops have:
- Completed more than 530 medical assistance missions
- Reunited 27 lost children with their families
- Assisted local law enforcement with numerous public safety operations
Military leaders say those accomplishments demonstrate the Guard’s continued value in supporting local authorities.
More Than 5,000 Troops Still Serving
Approximately 5,150 National Guard members remain assigned to Washington.
That total includes members of the D.C. National Guard, troops from 21 states, and personnel from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Officials also noted that the housing contract was completed in just 85 days, significantly faster than many comparable federal contracts, despite vendor protests during the bidding process.
Taxpayer Costs Continue to Draw Attention
The long-term deployment has also prompted questions about federal spending.
The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated the mission could cost as much as $3 million per day, while lawmakers cited separate estimates placing daily costs closer to $1.65 million.
National Guard officials argue the new apartment-style housing agreement will help reduce those expenses. According to the agency, the contract is expected to cost nearly 50% less than continuing to house thousands of service members in commercial hotels.
