Here’s what Trump and his team has to say.
Washington, D.C. – Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick took to the airwaves this weekend to calm fears and explain why President Donald Trump’s America First tariff strategy is exactly what the U.S. economy needs—especially for hardworking Americans who’ve been left behind by decades of globalist trade policies.
On April 2, President Trump declared “Liberation Day,” announcing a new wave of reciprocal tariffs designed to correct years of unfair trade practices. The president made it clear: foreign countries will no longer take advantage of American consumers and businesses without consequence.
While Wall Street temporarily dipped into correction territory, the president swiftly pivoted, settling on a universal 10% tariff and doubling down on negotiations with foreign governments. China remains the outlier, facing a steep 145% tariff—though Trump has signaled it could be reduced to 80% if Beijing agrees to fairer terms.
During his appearance on Fox News Sunday, Lutnick addressed job loss concerns raised by union officials as shipping volumes decline at ports and trucking companies.
“Let’s be clear: this is a strategic realignment, not a collapse,” Lutnick said. “President Trump is opening up global markets that have been closed to American goods for decades. This is about creating real opportunities for American workers and exporters.”
Lutnick cited a new deal with the United Kingdom as proof the strategy is working.
“We’ve unlocked $5 billion in new exports to the UK—everything from beef and ethanol to fruit, vegetables, machinery, and cereals,” he said. “That’s $5 billion in new demand for American-made products. It’s a game-changer.”
On CNN’s State of the Union, Lutnick further emphasized that the administration is fighting for fair trade, not free giveaways.
“We’ve posted our rates, and we’re saying: if you want lower tariffs, let Americans sell into your markets,” he said. “That’s what real leadership looks like.”
Despite left-wing media panic over a decline in Chinese imports, Lutnick pointed out that Trump’s team is engaged in constructive negotiations designed to secure real wins for American farmers, truckers, and manufacturers.
“The president’s goal is simple: Open up the world to American exports,” he said. “We are the world’s largest economy. Everyone wants access to our consumer base. Now it’s time they give us access to theirs.”
President Trump echoed that optimism on Truth Social, posting:
“Had a productive meeting with Chinese officials today in Switzerland. We covered a wide range of topics and reached several important agreements. It was a positive and forward-looking reset, conducted in a respectful and cooperative tone. Significant progress achieved!”
Some financial voices are calling for temporary tariff pauses, but the White House remains confident. The administration believes strong American leadership and smart negotiating will deliver lasting results that benefit everyday Americans.
While establishment critics and corporate lobbyists wring their hands, Trump is proving once again: real strength delivers real results.
