President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning: if the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas collapses, “all hell will break out.” With less than two days left until his return to the White House, Trump was questioned on whether he believed the terror group would honor its pledge to release hostages under the three-phase agreement reached earlier this week. The first group of captives is set to be freed Sunday afternoon. Trump was clear, stating that he expected the ceasefire to hold but emphasized, “It better hold.”
Trump also revealed that he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to “keep doing what you have to do” to protect Israel’s interests. While they are scheduled to meet soon, Trump didn’t provide further specifics, but he was firm in his support for Israel’s right to act decisively.
Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) echoed Trump’s sentiment, stressing the importance of Hamas following through on its promise to release 33 hostages over a six-week period. In exchange, Israel would release over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. “President Trump made it clear that ‘all hell will break out if those hostages aren’t back,’” Malliotakis said, adding that it’s in the best interest of all parties for the terms of the ceasefire to be fully implemented.
While both President Biden and Trump took credit for brokering the deal, it was Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who played a pivotal role in securing the breakthrough. His meeting with Netanyahu last week was reportedly the turning point in moving the deal forward, according to a senior Biden official.
However, the deal has not been universally accepted in Israel. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who opposed the ceasefire, called it a “terrible” agreement, and several members of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, announced they would resign in protest. This division highlights the deep tensions within Israeli politics regarding how to deal with Hamas and the broader conflict.
