Trump Lets Mexico Off The Hook

Trump Holds the Line on Mexico – For Now

President Donald Trump announced a surprise 90-day extension on trade negotiations with Mexico, allowing the country to avoid stiff new tariffs—for now. The move comes just one day before a Trump-imposed deadline that threatened to escalate the trade fight.

In a Truth Social post, Trump confirmed that he and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reached a short-term deal to maintain current tariffs:

  • 25% on fentanyl-related goods
  • 25% on automobiles
  • 50% on steel, aluminum, and copper

In return, Mexico agreed to immediately dismantle several non-tariff barriers that have long disadvantaged American manufacturers and farmers.

“We’ve agreed to extend the same terms for 90 days,” Trump wrote. “Mexico will continue to pay the tariffs, and we’ll work toward a deal that benefits America.”

Border Security and the Fentanyl Crisis Take Center Stage

Trump made it clear that this isn’t just about trade—it’s about national security. With cartel-driven drug trafficking spiraling out of control, the president insisted that any long-term agreement must address illegal immigration and the flood of fentanyl pouring into American communities.

“The border crisis is different than any other trade issue. It’s about keeping our country safe from deadly drugs, human trafficking, and illegal entry,” Trump emphasized.

Sheinbaum acknowledged the pressure, stating on X, “We avoided a tariff hike and now have 90 days to secure a long-term agreement through dialogue.”

Trump Sends Warning Shots to Mexico and the EU

Earlier this month, Trump issued a stern ultimatum to both Mexico and the European Union: sign fair trade deals by August 1 or face major tariff increases. In a direct letter to Sheinbaum, Trump accused Mexico of failing to crack down on the cartels turning North America into a “narco-trafficking playground.”

“Mexico has helped, but not enough,” he wrote. “I cannot let the cartels overrun our continent.”

The letter outlined a planned 30% tariff unless Mexico took stronger action. Trump also warned that any retaliatory tariffs would be met with even harsher economic consequences.

Trump Scores Trade Win with Europe

While Mexico was granted more time, the European Union took Trump’s warning seriously. Over the weekend, Trump revealed that the U.S. and EU had finalized a 15% across-the-board tariff agreement—a major shift from last year’s 2.5% baseline.

“We’ve opened up Europe’s markets and established a fair 15% tariff on autos and goods,” Trump said. “This is a massive win for American workers and industries.”

Though it’s slightly lower than the 20% rate he proposed in April, the deal represents a dramatic improvement from the outdated trade policies of past administrations.

🔴 Bottom Line: Trump Is Putting America First—Again

With a tough-on-trade posture and a focus on protecting the U.S. from deadly fentanyl, President Trump is once again taking bold steps to put American jobs, security, and sovereignty first. Whether dealing with Mexico, Europe, or China, Trump’s message is clear:

“If you want access to the U.S. market, play by our rules—or pay the price.”
