Tensions are higher than ever right now and Trump couldn’t look stronger.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted sharply after the United States carried out a dramatic overnight operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
The high-profile move followed President Donald Trump authorizing targeted U.S. military strikes against key Venezuelan military facilities near Caracas, a decision that immediately sent shockwaves through global political circles.
Speaking to reporters after meetings with European national security advisers, Zelensky said the operation demonstrated that decisive action against authoritarian regimes is possible when political will exists.
“If this is how dictators can be dealt with,” Zelensky said, “then the United States clearly understands what steps can be taken next.”
While Zelensky did not directly call for action, his remarks were widely interpreted as a pointed message toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Russia continues its military campaign in Ukraine more than three years after launching its invasion.
The reaction from Moscow was swift.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry released a formal statement demanding the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, accusing the United States of violating international norms and interfering in the sovereignty of another nation.
“We urge U.S. leadership to reconsider its position and release the legitimately elected president of a sovereign country and his spouse,” the ministry said, while calling for diplomatic dialogue rather than force.
Despite those demands, U.S. officials confirmed that Maduro and Flores were transported to New York City late Saturday night, where they are expected to face serious federal narco-terrorism charges.
President Trump addressed the situation directly, stating that the couple will face the “full wrath of American justice.”
According to sources familiar with the matter, Maduro and Flores are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and are expected to make their first federal court appearance as early as Monday.
For supporters of a stronger U.S. foreign policy, the operation marked a clear departure from years of restraint. For America’s adversaries, it served as a warning that under President Trump, the United States is once again prepared to act decisively on the world stage.
