Trump Tells Democrat Mayor To Ask For Help
President Donald Trump criticized Illinois leadership Tuesday after five Chicago police officers were injured during a large and disorderly Memorial Day weekend gathering that drew national attention.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson of failing to keep public order under control.
Trump reacted to the incident by criticizing Chicago and Illinois leadership, saying the situation had spiraled out of control after five police officers were seriously injured and arguing that local officials should seek outside assistance.
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded early Sunday morning to reports of a large unauthorized gathering in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood. Authorities said the situation escalated around 3:20 a.m. when an 18-year-old driver allegedly struck several officers with a vehicle before crashing into a police SUV, a fence, and a nearby pole.
Police identified the suspect as Rashad Johnson. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including five counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and weapons-related charges.
Officials said the suspect was allegedly driving in the wrong direction before mounting a curb and hitting officers who were attempting to clear the area. All five injured officers were transported to local hospitals and are expected to recover.
Residents described the overnight scene as chaotic, with large crowds gathering in the streets late into the night. Some nearby residents told local media they felt unsafe leaving their homes during the disturbance.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson later addressed the incident on social media, saying the city witnessed how quickly large unauthorized gatherings can become dangerous.
The mayor thanked responding officers for their efforts and encouraged parents and community leaders to help keep young people safe and accountable.
“My administration is creating opportunities and safe spaces for young people, but families, communities, and city leaders all have a role to play,” Johnson said.
The incident has renewed debate over public safety and crime in major American cities. Conservatives have increasingly argued that cities facing repeated public safety challenges should provide stronger support for law enforcement and tougher responses to violent behavior.
President Trump has frequently highlighted crime concerns in Chicago and other large cities during public appearances and campaign events. Last year, he proposed using National Guard troops to help combat violent crime in Chicago, though the effort was later blocked by the Supreme Court, which ruled the administration exceeded its authority.
Following the decision, Governor Pritzker criticized the Trump administration’s approach, while supporters of the president argued stronger action was needed to address ongoing crime concerns.
As public safety continues to remain a top issue for many voters, incidents like the Chicago Memorial Day weekend disturbance are likely to remain part of the national political conversation heading into the next election cycle.
